Has anyone been following this? I just tuned in on it last week, and now that I realize he has to tell the girl he chooses that he only makes 19k$ a year instead of 50 million, I'm quite interested in it. But the host still says there is a big twist at the end for everyone, even America. I personally think, that the catch is, if the girl decides not to marry him, the he gets the 50 million. It just seems logical too me.

Also on a commercial I saw while watching this... Married by America. Some new reality show where a bunch of people that were commited into this show are put online into a database where you can vote for pairs. They've never met each other before... So the catch is, these people have agreed to marry whoever America chooses. I guess you would call it a blind marrige. I think this idea, and the idea for Joe Millionaire were meniachal and absolute evil... But the writers are genius, it is worth watching.

Ack! i can't believe anyone watches those shows!! shallowness has reached new depths.....
99% of those people don't deserve to be breathing the same air as i do!! they are, pardon my language, fuckin idiots, complete wastes of skin and space! if it were up to me all those 'reality' show and talk shows (jerry springer, jenny jones, ricki lake etc..) would be scrubbed!!
one of the doctors i worked for was proposed to on sally jessie raphael (sp?)....and yes....the doctor was an idiot! so was her husband!!
i'm sorry to be such a nazi...but i REALLY hate those kinds of shows! and yes, i do realize to each their own..but damn!!!

Okay, in order to put this thread on a slightly better course, I'm going to list some of the shows I watch, ones that don't make me feel ashamed to admit to it:

Junkyard Wars (aka Scrapheap Challenge) - Ten hours to build a working device (such as a fireboat, golf ball machine gun or steam car) out of what you find in their junkyard. Requires ingenuity and teamwork. Welding skills don't hurt, either. The teams competing have even been known to help each other if one machine breaks down during the competition. BTW, the British version (Scrapheap Challenge) is far superior to the American one. The American hosts suck mightily compared to the Brits.

Full Metal Challenge - Created by the same lady who made Junkyard Wars and cohosted by Henry Rollins(!), twenty seven teams from around the world (literally, every continent except Antarctica was represented) had 30 days, $3,000 and a 3-ton weight limit to build a ground vehicle that could overcome anything. They were then put to the test through a series of challenges (some individual, some head-to-head) that put them chest deep into water, up steep hills, around curves, etc. The winner from each week went on to the next round. There were some really interesting designs submitted. Several tank-treaded vehicles, some with 6-8 wheels, some diesel, all with a lot of thought put into them.

Rough Science - A group of scientists (physicist, botanist, chemist, engineer, etc.) are placed on an island (a la Survivor) and given three days to accomplish a task. In one episode, the group had to build a machine capable of making ice, a thermometer and sunscreen.

Mail Call - A retired Marine sergeant takes your requests and demonstrates and explains various historical and modern military methods. Topics featured have been ninja weapons, flamethrowers, digging foxholes and Civil War speed loading.

Futurama - This is a very funny show by the creator of the Simpsons, but its languishing in the ratings seems to indicate it's a little too smart for the Survivor/Joe Millionaire crowd. Here's a sample. The gang is at a horse race (in the year 3000), and the finish is too close to call, so the judges go to a 'quantum finish'. The winner is announced, at which time the Professor tears up his ticket and shouts, "No fair! You altered the results by observing them!"

Okay, there you have it. Five good, smart shows that nobody watches because American Idol is on...

i suppose if i'm going to pick apart what others watch, i should at least be willing to be picked at myself lol
ok..so here goes....
law and order....all of them (i LOVE them), all the forensic science shows on discovery (i actually watch discovery quite a bit) the learning channel, some animal planet, the practice, news, david letterman, oprah and....here it is....the one i'm ashamed of....the bold and the beautiful! it's a horrible show actually and the acting is terrible, but i got into watching it with my ma when i was in australia (a lil justification there lol).
i like futurama, but it's not on all that often. oh...and alley mcbeal (sp?) and martha stweart.
i've never watch junk yard wars, but my son watches it.

Actually, I guess I should add at least a bit of content before I hit the post button, huh?

Does anyone remember a show (short-lived), that was on I think two summers ago called "The Chair"? Concept: you're strapped in a chair and you have to answer questions while keeping your heart-rate down... while the producers are doing things like dropping sparks on you, or shooting flames into your face, or letting aligators prance around your feet. If your heart rate went over a certain limit you couldn't answer questions and earn more cash until you got it back down, which you did within a certain time limit or were eliminated. Another similar show I believe was called "The Chamber". On that one I believe you just had to survive different types of inane torture within a metal cell that could be heated, spun, filled with water and presumably crushed... all for our at home viewing enjoyment.

Now obviously I'd be lying if I said I didn't watch these shows. I'll even go so far as to admit I was addicted to them (still am addicted to just about every 'reality' show they have on the ol' glass teat), but a very large part of that comes from the very intriguing nature of these shows. I mean, when shows like these start hitting the waves, it kind of makes you wonder what won't people do for money and the chance to be humiliated publicly before the entire nation. The foremost thought in my mind sometimes is "How far can they push the envelope this time?"

Anyone remember Stephen King's Bachman shorts entitled "The Long Walk" and "The Running Man"? Probably not too far around the corner.

Possibly Ellison (Harlan, not Ralph )was right when he said that TV was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs...

Makes me think about some old saying having to do with Romans and circuses.

Junkyard Wars and FMC are awesome shows.

So are Robotica and Monster Garage.

They used to show something called "Robot Wars" on one of the cable channels here, but now I can't seem to find it anymore. Contestants built robots and competed in knock-out competitions. There were flames, crushing devices, and nasty house robots. It was fun to watch... but now it's gone.

I haven't had a TV for a few years... But if I did...
I'd watch Buffy.

IMHO .. the reason why people watch Joe Millionaire is because it gives you everything you want .. and it resembles real life with real people .. showing there true qualities .. it is fun watching these girls be so superficial and this guy dealing with the guilt .. let's face it us America's are very superficial people and fox is just exploiding it in one hell of a show .. if that means I'm superficial because I watch the show well "oh well" .. it's your opinion

but I do watch Monster Garage, Junkyard Wars, The Osbournes, Frazier, Clone High(which is really good actually), Daria(when in it's hey day), and European Futbol! .. hehe .. shit I watch a lot of programs .. I know I couldn't list them all

Skaarjj: Yep, that's the one. I think I still have a plan lying around somewhere for a very mobile, stable, and destructive walker. I know walkers never did too well, but with the extra weight allowance I always imagined I could come up with something nasty...

OK although I'm getting a little fed up with some things on TV at the moment this is what I'd tend to watch (some of it I'll watch if it is on and some of it I'll actually go out of my way to watch).

Scrapheap Challenge - did you see the international one where British, American and french teams had to build a plane in 2 days??

Robot Wars (and other ones coming on soon) although it just dones't seem as exciting as it was.

Life of Mammals - David Attenborough does it again

There is a two parter trying to rebuild a couple da Vinci's inventions and I enjoy those kind of 'Secrets of the Ancients' series as they usually make a worse job of it than our ancestors do.

As much sci-fi as I can find. B5 has just finished a complete one a night run) but I'm warming to various series I haven't really got to grips with (until there wasn't much else on) like SG, Farscape and Enterprise.

Buffy and Angel (still) although both are really starting to get on my nerves.

Various 'idiot/dangerous things cuaght on tape' things if I'm bored.

And reruns of various comedy series (list in another thread) and the UKGold cable channel also does a nice line in the A Team.

Not a lot of shows hold my interest these days:

Enterprise; Stargate SG-1; Changing Rooms / Ground Force / House Invaders (I'm gonna miss BBC-America when we downsize from digital cable to basic cable) and their American clones; Junkyard Wars; Monster Garage; and a random assortment of shows from the Discovery, TLC and History channels.

I keep hearing these stories about Japanese television....

The one that sticks in my head most is this sort of eating-challenge show, where the competitors are presented with mochi (little rice-flour cake/candy things) stuffed with, well, God knows what. The competitor eats the mochi whole, then has to guess what's in it. Things like "oh, it's an incredibly hot red pepper" or "oh, it's a whole insect" seemed to be pretty common. The winner gets a pitcher of water to wash his mouth out.

I don't really remember any other specific shows, but everything I hear seems to suggest that the Japanese are into crazy humiliation/torture shows a lot more than we are over here in the Great Satan.

Ah, yes. Next up on my list are:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Still a good show, though I do wonder if its best seasons are behind it.

Farscape - Best Sci-Fi on TV, so they cancel it. Good thinking, Sci-Fi Channel!

Firefly - Died too soon. A show with a ton of potential if it had been given a chance. Would've been a good replacement for Farscape.

Daria - Loved this show, though I always wondered what the hell it was doing on MTV, since Daria routinely made fun of the people who are MTV's key demographic.

Clone High - Has potential, but for the moment it's too predictable. It has a lot of room to grow, though.

Good Eats - A cooking show I actually enjoy watching. He explains the science behind what happens when you cook, but keeps it entertaining.

Modern Masters - Spotlights artists in all sorts of mediums (furniture making, glasswork, sculpture, murals, etc.) who have mastered their craft. Beautiful stuff.

i got a TV 3 inches away from my pc but i never use it. whe i come home, i switch on my pc and at night i switch it off. i don't need anything more.

Why? Just because 90% of television is insipid doesn't mean that there aren't some real gems out there. It's like refusing to visit any art museums because you don't like 'modern' 'art'. I refuse to give up the medium entirely just because it's "TV".

Robot Wars is coming back to the US on TechTV. Not sure when it starts airing but I'll keep you posted.

As to the question asked above about why people watch these shows, all I can answer is that it's like watching a train wreck, no one wants it to happen but there's some sort of human fascination to see it as it does.

What with digital cable and satellite tv and all these millions of channels, I'm not surprised at the quality of the things that they do put on tv. 600 channels, and nothing on.

On the other hand, I will admit to watching a goodly amount of tv myself. Though my husband controls the remote, so I don't very often watch what I would prefer to watch, which is more often than not documentaries on ancient civilizations, historical fact and fiction shows and the like. But the shows he settles on are usually entertaining enough to get my attention for at least 30 minutes... And if he's watching something I don't want to watch, that's when I find other ways to entertain myself... read a book, create some graphics... whatever... But as for what's currently on that I don't find lame:

Fear Factor - the stunts are cool, but you couldn't get me to eat any of that crap for just $50k... Come to think of it, for some of that, I wouldn't eat it for any amount of money...

Monster Garage - already been said. Jesse James is THE MAN!

American Idol - ok, I admit... I enjoy Simon Cowell's scathing remarks to people who think they can sing but really can't. I also enjoy listening to the people who actually can sing. Though I abhore the blatant commercialism of the whole process... a very strange dissonance that continues to attract my attention...

A variety of shows on The Learning Channel, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and The History Channel... whenever there's something interesting on but nothing more interesting on another channel...

And the usual round of sports: NASCAR racing (36 weeks out of the year, Dale Jr. is going to TAKE Daytona this year!) and NCAA/ACC College Basketball (Go Duke!), some football on the off racing season, and of course, the Little League World Series.... now that's baseball...

Reality tv is nothing new. There was a recent bit on the morning news about the earliest made for tv wedding, which was actually from North Carolina... (why am I not surprised?) And COPS has been on for years... People are always intrigued by what other people are doing in their lives, and they believe that reality tv can let them observe other people in their natural habitat... What some people don't realize, is that reality tv, is still tv. On most of these shows, the producers choose the looks of the people who appear (note the busty babes in string bikinis... never a real woman up there, and the chisled good looks of most of the men, rarely is a beer gut to be seen...), they script a good portion of what goes on, with latitude allowed for natural reactions... They set up the scenes and situations to provoke specific reactions... It's not really the real world, despite what the advertisers say. Most intelligent life on our planet realizes this... And as such, it's harmless entertainment...
As harmless entertainment, we are enticed to watch it by our morbid curiosity to see the kinds of people that will allow themselves to be mocked in such a manner... specifically, what a person will do for the least amount of money... (Let me reference my above remark about Fear Factor's food challenges...) Since tv's do usually come with power buttons, anyone not interested in what's on these days can always turn it off and go do something else...

But seriously, the programming here is crap. Every channel seems to be flooded with "lifestyle" shows and reality TV. Where the hell in reality do you have 16 people with severe psychological problems all living in the same house for six weeks, and keeping them there? No where. It is not reality.

Well, it's better than Korea. Half the channels here are home shopping channels--and they are amazingly popular. The girl living below us is visited at least once a day by home shopping delivery. I'm beginning to suspect she's having an affair with the delivery guy. That's the only logical explanation.

You go Wangenstein! Farscape Rules! I 'm only watching Scifi for the last few episodes. All of the other Sci-fi on TV is pretty dull in comparison. I'll stop watching the Sci-fi network after Children of Dune is over.
