Savage is scheduled to have his own weekly one-hour show on MSNBC beginning in March.

Savage routinely refers to non-white countries as "turd world nations" and charges that the U.S. "is being taken over by the freaks, the cripples, the perverts and the mental defectives" (San Francisco Bay Guardian, 9/20/00). In a recent broadcast he justified ethnic slurs as a national security tool: "We need racist stereotypes right now of our enemy in order to encourage our warriors to kill the enemy," he explained (San Francisco Chronicle, 2/6/03).

Freedom of speech allows everything except slander...
it allows lying, otherwise the saying "let the buyer beware" would not have been created.
it even allows insults.

Ok, can anyone explain to me what "hoot" means?

And, though the thread title says otherwise, I don´t think freedom of speech should be denied even to such individuals.
I am just a bit concerned that this person is getting a show on a major US network - maybe I am over-interpreting but what does this tell about the management of MSNBC? Or about what they think people want to hear?

quote:
Commenting on the "Million Mom March" in favor of gun control (which he dubbed the "Million Dyke March"), he dismissed organizers' reference to American children killed by guns (5/15/00): "They?re not kids, they?re ghetto slime... they?re the same kids that are in Sierra Leone toting AK47s."

I'd just like to add that 'freedom of speech' is intended to allow a person to speak their mind without fear of punishment from their government.

It has nothing to do with what a person should or shouldn't be doing on TV.

He has every right to have his views, he has every right to stand on the street corner spewing them.

There is no inherent right to broadcast them on TV.

Southpark, which is a show that pokes fun at pretty much anything and averything...and stresses the point that no, nothing is sacred, and hypocrisy rules the world, has nothing at all to do with Michael Savage and his ignorant self-hating idiocy.

I love southpark because it does away with the scourge that is 'P.C.'.

The new group is called the Gladiater...it's a canivore insect, and eats other insects. What is really cool, is how the German scietist found it. He examined an old piece of amber, where a preserved Gladiator was entrapped inside. He then went out, and found the insect, in Africa. Total coolness.

What really bothers me is that obviously, there IS a demand for that person.
As there was a clear demand and debate around the Jerry Springer show.

The difference is, IMO that Jerry Springer just gives people the chance to make complete asses out of themselves, and everybody likes to see poeple who are even more stupid than they are. This is not great, not intelligent, and not really needed, but I couldn´t care less about it - To each their own.
But I think this is VERY different from someone who is just plainly a racist, among other things, getting to promote his views on national television - And if there´s a demand for that, it worries me greatly.

quote:
What really bothers me is... South Park. South Park denounces censor abuses and
politeness / politically correct heresies, in part.
But then it works, commercially, because of the masses of teenagers looking for something new,
some new wild sensation, experience.
And those understand South as what it is: pure nihilism. Society is shit, Kenny has to die because
he's poor, it's not worth to get a life. Not worth to stand up for what you desire.

Got a dictionary? Look up "persiflage", if you´ve got this word in english.
South park is a succes because it is understood as what it really is: A mirror in which we can see ourselves and the great society we live in - And yes, reflected in this mirror you are bound to see lots of nihilism - If you´re poor no one cares if you get healthcare or not, so you die. "fuck" is censored on TV, but if you say you don´t care how many children are killed by guns as long as they are black, you are protected by freedom of speech...
You suffer from acute "shoot the messenger syndrome". South Park is a (very very cynical) humourous view of reality. It does not tell teenagers it´s not worth standing up for anything - It shows them what reality looks like BECAUSE/IF no one is standing up for anything.

Savage does sound like a rather unsavory character, however, I would also defend his right to free speech. That way, I then retain the right to say that I think he's a pompous jackass with the brain of an amoeba. You gotta love this country.

As for South Park, I have to admit that I'm a big fan and I really enjoy the aspect of socal commentary.

As for Nazi's marching in the streets, I'm afraid it's as legal as a Republican rally. The english word "Nazi" is actually derived from the German phrase for National Socialist German Worker's Pary, Nationalsozialistische deutsche Arbeiter-Partei. In German, the first two syllables "Nati-" are pronounced the way Nazi is pronounced in english, hence the name.

Therefore, a Nazi is technically just a member of a political party. However, even within the Nationalist Socialist party itself, Hitler and those who followed him were in a minority for their way of thinking and it is this part of the Nazi party which gives people the chills.

So, a Nazi rally is not in and of itself anything evil if taken in a purely technical sense and I'm sure they are organized under the "political party" banner. But I'm pretty sure they're not just getting together for some snacks and a hearty sing-a-long. Still, legal nonetheless.

Yes, he has the right, and should have it, and should be ignored. I agree.

What bothered me in the first place (and still does) is that there are obviously enough people in the management of MSNBC who think
1) there´s a large number of people who want to see this
2) there are companies which will buy commercial time during this show
3) it is responsible to give this person a platform to promote his views

Would anyone of you from the US be willing to actually watch this once, just to find out WHICH companies buy the commercial time? I would really like to know.
