Some times my mouse freezes a bit. When i am in PS ot other programs i do not always have control about it's movements. Sometimes the cursor stops for a second and then it moves very fast. Try using the paintbrush tool this way...ends up in a total mess. It's not the ball becouse when i use my girlfriends mouse i have the same problem.
Some specs:
My mouse: USB ball mouse
Girlfriends mouse: USB wireless optical with cradle.
Comp:
800MHz Athlon T-Bird, 256MB Ram where 32MB is shared for the onboard graphics chip. Win98SE
Other USB device: ADSL Modem (speedtouch 330).

This is so anoying and i tried so much to get rid off it. I updated win98, bios, mouse drivers, tried other selction in bios... I lost it anyone who could help?

Sounds like you've tried the lot there. Maybe it's conflict in ports, but I've never experienced a slow mouse pointer by a port conflict, I have though with how the USB is use on pointing devices and VIA drivers, when coping stuff from CD.

Try:

- If you mobo is via chip set. Download the 4in1 drives. (Only if it is VIA Chip set).

- Have you got a PS/2 connecter, use that on the end of the USB and use PS/2 port.

If that does not work, wait till a computer wiz comes along...

Tried another driver.. it's a bit better.
Most problems are when the comp is busy. It looks like this:

Mouse: please move my pointer a bit.
Comp: Wait a sec i'am busy doing something.
Mouse: O come on, can't you move my pointer?
Comp: I told you to WAIT.
Mouse: don't want to...
Comp: Here you go i move you 40 pixels
Mouse: but..
Comp: WHAT?
Mouse: i only had to go 15 pixels can you move me 25 back?
Comp: Wait i am busy.
Mouse: Darn...

If you were running WinXP or Win2k, I'd suggest to use the task manager to take a look at all processes running and try to figure out which one, if any, is using the cycles of your CPU more than it should. Sometimes, this trick is very handy for me. But, since you seem to be using Win98SE, my tip is useless for you.

I only remember that I had that problem a while back... I had exactly the same problems as you're having now. Never really found out what the problem was, but after buying a new one (same type and model.. it was a simple microsoft mouse) everything went smoothly again. I think that the hardware in the mouse were worn out. I don't know how long those sensors are supposed to last, but I think in my old one they were worn out.

Try connecting another mouse to your comp. If the problem persists, it's not your mouse.

How about cleaning it.. or is that too obvious? Take the ball out, look at the rollers...could just be a matter of scungy build up. Q-tips and rubbing alcohol.

I know a friend that had the same problem. He just switched on PS/2 port and all went right. It's not a mouse problem because your friend's mouse doesn't work either... So it is probably the USB or the computer.

I had the exact same thing with my wireless mouse a while back.
Cleaned it and changed batteries, didn't help...

Then I moved my cellphone to the other end of the table and ta-da all was fine... My mouse even reacts to our normal wireless housephone.
