Avril Lavigne is very pretty. And her studio has assigned her good songwriters, musicians, studio technicians, makeup and wardrobe artists, and marketing/publicity people. With all that machinery behind her, she's bound to be appealing, if not exactly groundbreaking. I mean, what do you want out of pop?

Does she write all her own songs? Not really (it sounds much less punk/anti-establishment when dug into ):

I kind of like her album. Her music has some variety to it, and her choruses are kind of catchy... I wouldn't go so far as to say she's "punk", I remember what punk is... Pop is closer to what she's turning out. She's a kid still, and therefore entitled to some play with her clothes and make-up. But she has some talent. The question is: can she repeat her success without starting to repeat herself. That was the problem Fiona Apple had. Her second album sounded exactly like her first one.
It remains to be seen if Avril will have any longevity in her career...

Your friend, Yannah, is entitled to have her own opinions about her tastes in music (as has been stated above). Same as you are.

Do I like her? Not a bit.

My 8 year old daughter *loves* her, and I'm fine with that. The music is decent as far as relative musical ability is concerned, and the lyrical content is rather good as far as the general message she conveys.

And while that isn't something *I* need in music, it's certainly somthing I look for in what my 8 year old listens to.

As has been said, I have no interest, but there are *far* worse things out there these days...

I've only heard a couple of songs from her. It was ok, better than a lot of things, but far from good. Calling her music punk would be wrong imo, calling it pop with small elements of punk and rock would be closer to target imo. The lyrics (the ones I've heard) are pretty good as well, but there are other bands out there that write better lyrics.

A lot of the stuff she does also seem kind of forced, like she is trying to create an image that isn't really her...

She's 19(Avril), 3 years older than me, and yet she's co-writing her songs in an immature way...she's supposed to agree and disagree to whatever's good, not just agree to whatever could put her into the industry as a musician...and her lyrics aren't. so does this post make sense?

These days, mainstream music is all about marketing. Anyone keep up with that American Idol? A prime example of the blatant commercialism of the music industry. Every now and then, you come across an artist who's managed to make it decently and still keep their soul. Ben Harper is one I can think of off the top of my head...

I'm not surprised that a young singer like Avril Lavigne is taking advantage of the behind the scenes machinery that's moved her closer to the top of the pop charts... In her position, wouldn't you? Money is money, right? That is, if you're not interested in keeping your soul...

hi ya
i am new to the "ozone" and was lurking thru the topics and had to drop by to say something about avril.
i recently read an article about her in Rolling Stone - yes that Rolling Stone - and there was a point where David Bowie was brought up - she DIDN'T KNOW WHO HE WAS!!!! Scary ain't it?
I mean I realize she is from the teeny bopper set but David Bowie?????
As for my feelings about her - I think she is a "pre-made" teen idol - like a gothic Britney. She too will fade like the boy bands and christina. that is if we are lucky.
When I really want to listen to some serious female tunes I go to Melissa Etheridge or Susan Tedeschi. Maybe Avril knows who they are - ya think?

thanx -for letting me ramble - i think i am going to like it here!

Personally I think an "artiste" like Avril is more damaging than an American Idol (or Pop Idol as we have here in the UK). She is far less blatantly commercial, even though underneath she is doubtless as bad as any other. Therefore her commercial approach to what is, in my opinion, an art form of sorts is doubly wrong. I wrote an rant about her, among other things, on my site a while back: http://quis.coolfreepage.com/?p=articles/society

I've always been confused by this notion that a band/singer/whatever is somehow wrong if they do what sells.

I mean...they call it show business for a reason people.

There is no artist that has released an album on a major label without being deemed commercially viable. By the very nature of the recording industry, anyone who gets an album out is a 'sellout'.

as tool so poignantly stated - "I sold out long before you ever even heard my name, I sold my soul to make a record, dipshit"

So, is 'little rebel Avril' what she appears to be? In my eyes, yes, as I never thought she was anything more than people here have been trying to 'reveal' her as... =)

i see your point of view DL-44... but i will share with you my ... musician's... point of view.

Music... isn't meant to be a pre fabricated, mindless, all-about-the-looks, MTV bullshit song. Music is supposed to make you feel, think, and feel some more. Music, in the first place, wasn't meant to be a means of income, or show business as you put it. People like Avril Lavange, BSB, N'Sync are all wrong. Because its unemotional (no matter how much it makes some little 13 year old cry to watch them lipsync), they dont even fucking play music (an instrument), they dont credit the bands (the ones who really matter) who play their music, they name the entire band after THEMSELVES when they're the ones who make their music suck, they ALL sound the same, they aren't original in the least. SO yes, i think that all pop bands are wrong, MTV is wrong, music for the love of music is where its at, and if you listen to anything else other than Pop: i commend you, thanks for not being brainwashed.

Commercially Viable? Perhaps. But thats not the point i'm trying to make. You either play music because you love music, or you play music for the money and to be famous. If you reach fame from the first then you accomplished what lots of people didn't have the talent to. If you reached fame from the second... then go ahead and sing your one song, people will remember you for about 15 minutes, and then you can go away and we wont have to listen to you anymore.

The bands/musicians that are remembered are the true musicians. Dont be something you're not just to get famous and you might stick with a couple people or change them in some way. No one's gonna go out and change their lifestyle or think about an issue or sit down and think about something because of an avril Lavange song.

If you think about it, the root word for Music is the word Muse.... do you find pop bands as a muse? I know i dont. I'd rather castrate myself with a spoon than be inspired by those retards.

Samzen. I think you got it right when you mentioned music's purpose. But I'll be honest with you. I stopped reading you're post after you mentioned the BSB, NSync, bullshit scam. - True they don't play their own instruments, true they don't write their own songs. But they are talented. I hate their music and probably always will, but they've got talent. They're the same as the people you see on American Idol. They've got voices, and they use them. Just because you don't like the music, doesn't mean it sucks.

sanzen - i'll never dispute that you should go into a music career because you love what you do and you have the talent to go along with that.

Bottom line is, if it doesn't sell you're not going to get anywhere. Obviously there are mulitple levels of the 'sellout' phase, and some people leap right in with their eyes and ears closed.

Even the Beatles wouldn't have been what they were without George Martin pushing them in the right (as in 'more commercially viable') direction.
