I've had some friends ask me to make some of the photos I take into wallpapers for them. It got me thinking about adding a section to my webpage of some of my favorite photos in several sizes for people to download and use.

The only question is: What sizes?

I've browsed through several wallpaper sites and there doesn't really seem to be much of a consensus. I want to go all the way up to 1600x1200 for people like me, and down to 800x600. But what would be some good intermediary sizes that are common?

Is 1024x768 the most common next to 800x600?

1600x1200

My advice - make an action or batch process to just take a file and make it every resolution.

or you could take a look at your server stats, if I'm not mistaken, I think the resolutions are there too..

Kret design wallpapers for:

1024x768
1152x846
1280x1024
1600x1200

To me they?re the most common sizes. But (and a big BUT too), monitors and TFT's are all different and now with the vertical views and all sizes, it's hard to match a screen size perfectly. Since I got new drives for my Geforce. I now have screen sizes of:

640 x 480
720 x 480
720 x 576
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1152 x 864
1280 x 1024
1600 x 1024
1600 x 1200
1920 x 1080
1920 x 1200

And that's with out it being vertical (or rotated 90 degrees), if my monitor was a TFT ! So just design for1024x768, 1152x846, 1024x768, 1600x1200 that's what I did when I had some wallpapers at my site for download.

800x600
1024x768

are the most common ones I've seen... You might just do a few of the more common sizes, and then put a notation that if someone wants a size that's not available, they could then drop you a note for it... (Using of course, an address that's set aside to deflect spam and whatnot...)

Personally, I would hit just a couple basics -

800x600
1024x768
1600x1200

and possibly 1280x960 (1280x1024 is a bastard resolution that doesn't follow the 4:3 aspect ratio like the rest do).

Anone that falls in between can easily resize, set the wallpaper property to stretch, or simply leave it centered on the screen with a margin...

That's what I've been thinking DL. Too much work for me otherwise. heh

Let them pick one close and resize it.

It's not a 4:3 aspect ration like most other popular resolutions.

But what is wrong with that. I realize that it doesn't follow the 4:3 aspect ratio, but it's never interfered with anything that I've ever had to do.

Well, if you think about an image that's 200px by 200px of a perfect circle. (As perfect as it can be anyways)

Put that image on a screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 4:3 resolution and it'll display a perfect circle. This is because your monitor viewable area uses a 4:3 aspect so 1280x960 will divde evenly into perfectly square pixels on both axis. Using a non 4:3 aspect ratio like 1280x1024 means you have an extra 64 pixels along the y axis of the screen which will cause each pixel along the y axis to be shorter which will distort that perfect circle as the pixels aren't quite "square" in that resolution.

Dig?

cfb - if you have it available, switch from 1280x1024 to 1280x960....look at the differences.

Is it going to interfere with anything? no. Is there anything *wrong* with it? Well, that's a matter of opinion I suppose. Nothing earth shattering.

But if you're making wallpapers, there's no sense in accounting for non-standard aspect ratios...

oh, and personally, I run 1280x960 on one machine and 1024x768 on the other.

Great idea, krets. Your photos deserve to be on desktops, I love your work.

I make these available on my site:

1600 × 1200
1280 × 1024
1024 × 768
800 × 600

I know 1280 × 1024 is wang, but that is the res I normally work at.
