Who's going? And what do you all think of it. I'm planning on going the 14th when it is released early in the morning with a friend.

I will only say this: if you didn't get the "point" (in quotes because Drac is right--there are so many) of the first movie, then I doubt the second movie will be any more understandable.

It opens on the 15th here... next Thursday. Yes, I will be going to see it.

On the 16th in France, but I managed to buy tickets for the preview on the 15

About the point of the first movie, it was pretty well explained, I just had a regret the philosophy was not more consistent.

And of course they show the movies in English! I would torch the theater if they made me watch the Matrix dubbed in Korean (or LOTR, or any other movie for that matter). Fortunately, though, they have subtitles. Well, they're not really subtitles, since they are on the side of the screen and not the bottom, but I suppose that's close enough.

OK, well if you go to the matrix website, www.whatisthematrix.com, they have a quite extensive philosophy section. A bunch of really smart people, or the best BSers in the world, wrote a bunch of essays. Those might help.

Edit: Of course, they also might confuse the hell outta you.

It's a movie. You can poke holes in the logic of any movie if you want to. Heck, reality isn't even all that logical most of the time.

The first step in enjoying any work of fiction, be it a book or a movie, is "suspension of disbelief." You can refuse to suspend your disbelief, of course, and nitpick at little details and flaws of logic, but you will never truly be able to enjoy the work.

I mean, come on... Keanu Reeves as the savior of humanity? We're talking major suspension of disbelief here from square one. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

very good point suho. the point isn't that you have to entirely believe that everything could/would happen, but that at that moment what you're seeing is happening. spielberg is (usually) a master at this. the matrix, btw, wasn't necessarily an easy film to "get", it took till my third viewing (which was, incidentally, still in the theater) to really wrap my brain around everything. even now as i watch it again, read the philosophy articles that were posted earlier, discuss it with friends, etc., i understand bits and pieces even more.

another interesting companion to the suspension of disbelief was something fascinating that was talked about in the commentary on the ghostbusters dvd (which is outstanding for anyone interested). they discussed what they called "the sliding scale of reality", the basic concept being that if they introduced unusual things to you a little bit at a time and got you to accept them you'd accept more and more as the story progressed. in ghostbusters they start with the sighting of the ghost in the library and the eggs frying on the apartment counter; by the end of the film you've got a giant marshmellow man terrorizing new york and that seems completely normal i think the matrix employed similar techniques as well.

Yup, that's very true. The "sliding scale of reality." I like that. Of course, in the Matrix, there was a bit of jarring weirdness when Neo first finds out what's going on, but I think that's the idea--you're supposed to be a little taken aback, just like Neo is.

Actually, I never saw the Matrix in the theaters... I never really thought too much about seeing it until my brother started going on and on about how awesome it was. I didn't see it until later on, on video. I think I've only actually seen the whole movie twice. I will be getting the DVD, though, when we get our DVD player and home theater system this summer (somehow seeing the Matrix on my 15 inch computer screen with my tiny little speakers just doesn't sound like all that much fun, so I'm going to wait).

OK, I'm pretty confused now about my tickets. They say 3:30 AM, Wednessday 14th. Suposedly the movie doesn't come out until the 15th. But how could they make a mistake like that? They could get in huge trouble for something like false advertising. Oh well, I'm going to ask the person at the box office when I go with my friend to pick up his ticket. I'm very confused/dissapointed/angry.
