"WARNING: Backup your data and replace your hard disk drive IMMEDIATELY. A failure may be imminent."

I got this when I booted up my computer just a few seconds ago. My computer has been overheating recently and likes to turn itself off. I have it underclocked right now and the processor is still hot. It runs idle at 134° F, and shuts off at 150° F - about 10 minutes worth of a video game. I'll probably go to liquid cooling soon.

I'm burning CDs right now. If you don't see me for a few days/weeks, it's because I can't afford a new hard drive at the moment

uhh. . . yeah that's bad. My old hard drive did that about 20 minutes before it totaly took a shit on itself. Good thing I was installing a new hard drive at the moment that happend. Quickly did what you are doing and now I'm safe.

That's really hot for your computer to be running isn't it?

good luck to ya!

C:\ - Yeah, it's pretty hot in there. For a while my computer has just been randomly shutting off so I finally installed some system monitoring software - sure enough, she's running HOT. For a temp fix I'm going to be getting a better heatsink with a larger fan, but as soon as I have the money I'll move her over to liquid cooling. Because once I put my second processor in, she's only going to get hotter.

Luckily I just picked up a second job today, so hopefully it won't be too long before I can upgrade

I don't have enough going on in my computer for it to get too hot. I am however wanting to upgrade my box. There is a sweet box at a local computer shop that I want real bad.

Good luck to you and hope you get that hard drive soon. At least get all your files burned to CD before it crashes.

Yup, that happened to me once. Totally freaked me out. I pretty much did the same thing you're doing now, and then my hard drive screamed "Freeeeeeeeedoooooooom!!!" before it got it's head chopped off.

It happend to me too only i did not got the warning.
In 1999 HD's did not all had the SMART system wich monitors the HD health. I heard a grinding sound and a lot off noise. Some times it would stop or be softer but in the end it turned out the HD has worn out it's bearings. And the motor could not maintain constant speed. The HD crashed with a lot off noise when the bearings colapsed and the head scratched the disks.

When you have heating problems you might look into the bios/jumper settings from the motherboard. Maybe you are giving the processor to much power? eg.: 2.3 V instead of 2.15 V or something. This can make a difference about the temp.

Happened to one of my friends. He took the sides off of the case and stuck a 22" fan up in there. That cooled it right down and he had plenty of time to take care of business. Matter of fact, he kept is like that for several months, which I don't exactly recommend.

2th: I've got the board set to give the processor what it asks for... I'll dig into my AMD manual though and see if I can get a suggested voltage for it. I've got her underclocked right now (1.2GHz instead of 1.6GHz) and it seems to be alright. I cleaned out my heat sink as well - it idles at 108° F now. While running something processor intensive it hovers around 120° F.

wj: Nothing but my 5 usual case fans for me; I'll avoid the box fan at the side I've made up my mind about liquid cooling though, I will have it within a month & a half - I'll be getting the lc at the same time I pick up my new 200gb hard disk drive. I'll give a narrative of the upgrade someday, because knowing me, it'll be filled with stupid mistakes and "OH, DUH!!" kinds of things
