Congratulation InI !

I tried twice this year to kick the nasty habbit and floundered with it. At least I am down to half a pack now. Quitting those Ciggies got to be one of hardest things to do.

I guess I just keep on trying

Pick yourself up some healthy finger food. Like grapes or unroasted unsalted peanuts.

Another good trick is to make your mouth "nasty". Like brush your teeth and then drink some grapefruit juice.

I hear vitamin C helps as well.

good job! I beleive it was Mark Twain that once said "Stop smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I have done it a million times"

I don't smoke ciggies anymore, but I do enjoy a nice cigar every once in a while.

A great big KUDOS to you for taking the initiative to break such a bad habit... Yer tha MAN!

Both my parents gave up smokeing 4/3 years ago, my Dad first 4 years ago and then my mum followed suit, with out nicitone or anything my dad took to chewing gum and my mum put on a little more weight on, but she soon lost it and my dad soon hated chewing gum so all went to normal

I think its more of a case of will power than this crap that its made out to be,
society likes to try and make excuses for people who are just weak willed or dissfunctional eg all these condtions that are broght up because of Kids with "hyper active tendencys"

it even happens to me my handwrintgs messy and I supposedly have a conditon where my brain moves faster than my hands and so i have messy handwriting and my spellings get jumbled up... . I was quite happy just saying my handwrtings messy and i cant spell very well which is the truth.. but instead I got into my English Lit GCSE examination and found out I could do all my GCSE's using microsoft word with AutoComplete -- with presets such as capatilations and FIND and so on and a whilst Spell check was disabled, the only thing that was disabled was my UK Dictonary so I made do with a US one and just used spell check to check for the words that wherent spelt correclty..
and you know what? I did it all in the open and it was supposedly all above board,

its actulay disgusting and is dissapoiting that becuase i have messy handwriting and cant spell very well I get all this and 20% of my examination time on top of the orignal time as extra so today i got 3 hours instead of 2 and a half.

anyway that i was a bit of a offtpoc rant from smokeing. but i take it you got my point

InI - Congrats on quitting smoking. I quit for about 6 months when my wife was pregnant, but now...I knew I would go back.

If you need something hanging out of your mouth, try a toothpick or a cut up straw (drinking straw cut in half) for a while. Turkey helps too as a food. Pixie stix help too... sugar in a straw.

It has nothing to do with oral fixation. It's a drug. An addictive one, plain and simple.

Quitting cocaine almost three years ago, difficult as *that* was, it's a cakewalk compared to nicotine. While I was in rehab, heroin addicts told me the same thing.

I'm still stuck at 4-5 Marlboros a day. Just enough to maintain the addiction.

Well done InI
It's difficult 'tis true, but each day can only bring more benifit to you, (heh, taopoem).
I think the greatest hurdle to get over (as well as the nicotine) is the HABIT, the routine, of smoking. And the greatest tool we have to overcome that is our imagination.
(I managed to pack in 'ciggies' two years ago).
go for it InI

i, on the other hand, have been consciously trying to START the habit for the last 5 years. so far, i'm pretty good at binge-inhaling packs now and then, especially when i'm drinking (not as often as most people think), but otherwise got no craving for the damn things.

go figure.

I quit last year september. But I allow myself the liberty of starting again when I want to, and if someone near me is smoking I'll not try to avoid sniffing up some delicious nicotine. But the thing is, I haven't smoked a bit since I quit and now that my sense of smell has recuperated I think it kinda smells.
I do dream of smoking occasionally. When I'm really desperate I dream of smoking two or three ciggys at the time

If you actually manage to quit the habit, more power to you, Ini! Cigs are a hard, very hard, habit to quit...been trying for years *sheepish grin*

I was even over a year without smoking...then came the messy divorce *puff, puff*

Damn it.

I may attempt to stop during my next vacation (coming up soon). I'm...intolerable when going through nicotine withdrawls...and it takes about one, two weeks for the craving to subside...though the psychological need is still there (doesn't ever go away, I hear).

So, be glad that you are attempting this alone...having a significant other (loved one, etc) near...is mostly excruciating on them...

Good luck, and don't give up!

Good to hear that, InI! I agree that it is mostly a mental addiction. I became a vegetarian overnight because it had been on my mind for several years prior.

My dad quit ciggies after 30 years of loving them. He was a smoker one day and one just he just stopped and has never touched them since. That was several years ago now.

There's a much simpler solution to giving up smoking. Don't take it up in the first place. I've withstanded a hell of a lot of peer pressure over the years, and I'm all the healthier. Besides, so many people smoke on the train station I have to frequent regularly, I'll probably die from second-hand smoke.

InI, if you have the willpower to stay off cigarettes, it may very well be the best decision you ever make. Well done, and good luck.

binary - I did much the same as bugs.

When I realised just how much crap gets shoved down the necks of animals in order to increase their output, combined with techniques to increase the yield-per-achre, I just couldn't bear the thought of being a party to such inhumanity.

I recently discovered Organic, free-range meat, but the revulsion is now so engrained that my body will not allow meat past my lips (and I do mean that quite literally... it's almost become a reflex action).

hey- good job. Next month it will be 2 years for me. I tried to quit right after college- it took 5 years from when I decided to quit to actually quitting. The break point was when I just got back from Colorado, was unemlpoyed, and living with my parents. I was waking up after they left for work (8:00am)and would go out in the backyard and light up, then throwing the butts in the bushes. I did this for about 2 weeks. Smoking a cig was the first thought in my mind!!!!!! Ugh!

That was it. My buddy got married and I told myself I would try and quit afterwards. . . . and I stopeed ever since. It took me about 6 - 8 months to get rid of the cravings.

Good luck my friend and feel free to post with your progress. Remember: cravings are only temporary and they pass. Just hang in there until they go away. After a bit they are fewer and far between, until eventually going away all together.

seriously though, man was meant to eat meat... look at your teeth. though, we used to go about it in a humane way. if you call butchering things with spears and rocks after chasing it around for days. A Cow would eat me if he could..... survival of the fittest... taken to the extreme.
