I'm thinking about gettin' a new PC. I want one for the main room that'll hold on my MP3s and maybe even serve them to my other PC. I also would like to get a little mini-render-farm for pov-ray. I've got a chance to pick up a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC server for around 750$ Just wanted to know your guys opinion about it.

Its got 1 2.4Ghz Xeon but its capable of up to 2
533 Mhz front side bus (not too sure what that means )
128MB DDR Ram, but its capable of 4gigs!!!
2 73GB (10k RPMs) hard drives (and slots for 2 more)
An Ultra320 SCSI controller for the hard drives
Integrated :P ATI-Rage XL with 8MB SDRAM
a standard floppy, CD-Rom, keyboard, and mouse

I'll have to upgrade the RAM, get a sound card, and if I can save up enough later, maybe I'll get that 2nd processor =)

750$ ?

The CPU is more than ok (though I prefer AMDs for their cheapness and power), and the motherboard seems to be ok too (the speed of the bus defines the speed of your motherboard to exhange the informations between components). The hard-drives rock ! My my two SCSI at 10000 rpm, each of 73 Gb... Ah you just made me jealous There are just two little problems on this computer. It seems it was used as a server (it has all its characteristics), so the graphic card is outdated. Of course it depends of the use you intend to have of the computer, but really a 8 Mb video card will penalize your computer a lot. And as you said, you need to increase the amount of memory, 128 Mb isn't enough at all nowadays. 256 would be a mininum, and 512 acceptable.

It would be a good choice in my opinion to buy this computer.

actually, the front side bus is mostly between the cpu and the ram nowadays...

anyhow, beware, this baby should be loud. 10k rpm scsi disk generally are.
So if your 'main room' would be your living room, or on the same floor as your living room, I'd get something else.

But then, it would rock as povray render, probably (mostly because the xeon has a larger internal cache than a P4, or an athlon for that matter)

I have been using Dell stuff for about 5 years and will swear by them, however there deals are usually based on minimum specs so If you get the max upgrades that you can afford you will be a very happy dude...
