No one can equal the Doc and folks here at the Asylum.

However if I needed a very simplified/dumbed down version of same type of let's say the first page of the Asylum and the listing of the different chat rooms, how might I go about it?

I have no programming skills but my community is desperate for a website to communicate on.

I run several listservs and the one I have up now for my town is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SomersForum

It is very primitive, and must move on to the next step.

Would you please tell me where to look in Google, etc.? Can you provide guidance?

Many thanks as always.

This is The Place.

I think you should take a look at PHPBB or Invision Power Board. Both with provide you entirely customizable PHP boards.

Many thanks for the responses.

Question: PHPBB

1) it is offline now; is that usual?

2) you said it is free but I see that it has a registration fee of $59.00 a year.
What do I not understand?

Thanks again for the listings!

Thanks for the correction.

If I download phpBB, it won't interfere with my Windows98 will it?

Thanks again.

countryboy: Thanks for clarifying things (you had me worried for a bit there ). You also said:

I suppose it depends on what you do with it. If you install it in some web space then I can't see why it would give you any problems. Are you planning on running it from your PC? If so you will have to also install PHP - this shouldn't cause any problems with Windows either.

Downloading phpbbs it's self will not interfer with windows98 you simply unpack it, and drop the contents into a folder on your websever and access it, to proceed with setting up the database and preferances.

I don't thing it's the best idea to run a web server on win98, granted I run Apache under win2k, it just takes a little tweeking and extras to make sure it remains secure.

You do have you own webserver or webhost with a web server that is running PHP and mySQL?

kind of off the topic- but I grew up a little south of you CB. Pleasantville. Now I live in Brooklyn. Asylum has people all around the world- and as close as a 45 minute drive. Funny . . .

You said "your community is desperate for a website to communicate on" -- that sounds like you'll need to look into the entire structure of web hosting. How to register a domain name, how to get hosting, how to make basic web sites, and so forth. The Asylum FAQ will help you with all of this (and about a gazillion other websites are dedicated to the same things), but you're definitely starting at the ground floor on this one.
