A friend of mine who used to work for fire dept. said that neither he nor anyone he knows has ever heard of a church catching fire (except the cases where its done deliberately). Most churches are made out of wood and have tons of burning candles in them which make one hell of a fire hasard... but not really. I found this very interesting and decided to look deeper into the notion.

Have any of you ever heard of a church burning not because it was set on fire deliberately?

Dry Gulch - The church of the fair town of Dry Gulch burned to the ground last night, after being struck by lightening.
Church Fire - Every December, an Episcopal church burns down when a candle or an electric light burns too close to Christmas greens.
Funny - I hope your f@#king church burns down and your f@#king website dies. jesus christ you make me so mad.

I'm sure there is more, but I'm bored...

Actually, the church I attended when I was young burnt down, and there were no candles in it (it was a Presbyterian church, and I believe you're thinking of Catholic churches or cathedrals when you say "tons of burning candles"--Protestants don't light candles like that). The church building was a hundred years old or so, and was a historical landmark in our little town (hamlet, actually--we didn't have enough people to be a town). So that kind of sucked.

[Edit: Man, GN, that last link is harsh. I don't think there is a single positive letter on that whole page... and yet they still post them all. It must make them feel more righteous.]

You know, I think "Church on Fire" would be a great name for a band...

I've been attending the same church for a while now and several years ago half of it burnt down. I think it was an electrical problem that started it. So it does happen.

Suho -- ya need to read the actual Web site. They post the letters because they're funny. They're from people who don't seem to understand that Landover Baptist Church is an insane joke.

Examples of their stories:

Evening prayer vigils and book burnings to be held throughout the weekend!

Yea. Its a joke website. pretty funny one at that.
I like this from the bottom of the beliefs page....
"Please note - If you do not have the same beliefs as we do,
you are going to burn in Hell forever."

Suho - The presbyterian church in my town burnt down when I was little too,
it was also a historical landmark, you wouldn't happen to be from Texas?

Upstate New York, actually. There must be a bunch of historical Presbyterian churches around the country...
