I think I recall seeing an image->ASCII converter once, for small pictures.. I wouldn't be surprised if someone made a big one, and just did that for all the frames in the sequence. Or something like that. Pretty cool stuff. I don't think I could stand to watch the whole movie that way though. ;D

So what's the text field for? I change the number and it just goes back to 80.

it's probably related to this line-

var delay=80; // <---- delay after each frame

We have done so.

InSiDeR: mr.maX has always been here - if checked the roll call you'd find that he never missed a day (unfortunately these are kept securely locked away).

I don't really see what's so interesting about it. So someone ran an image -> ASCII program on part of a film, big deal.

I knew a bunch of software engineering students who wrote a program to convert full motion digital video into ASCII animations like this in real-time. Now that was impressive, epically when viewed on a big projection screen. Would make for a rather unique web cam too =)

Although, what is interesting is that you can zip that 4.4mb HTML file down to 480k -- most likely due to the overly redundant and repetitive nature of ASCII art.

I programmed an image to ascii converter once in php (needs mySQL for the char-db).
here's a link if somebody's interested: http://sourceforge.net/projects/img2ascii/
It's quite slow though, naturally. I'm pretty content with the results, here's an example of a gradient from white to black: http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/img2ascii/gradient_natural.html

The movie looks quite nice, though it would look way better with more letters. It just uses about 15 of around 170 possible different charactres, what would result in better grayscales.

cheers, Gweilo
