Hi, guys. How are you?
I have just encountered a question yesterday.
A friend of mine was signing out Hotmail.
I said:
Hey, just close your window. It doesn't matter.

He said:
No, it is important cuz otherwise my personal information or something related to me is accessable by other people.

I was sort of embarrased cuz I didn't say anything about it. I had no idea if it is true or not even I am studying web thing and he doesn't.

My question is:

Is that important to sing out when I use whatever on the internet?

Thanks.

It's only important if someone else is going to be using the computer after you get off. In that case, if you don't sign out, then they might be able to get into your email, pretending that they're you. This only works because they're on the same computer, so the web site can't tell that they're not the same person. So you should sign out when using a public computer, like at a library or something.

But if it's your own computer, and you're not sharing it with anyone you don't trust, you don't have to worry about it.

Hi, Slime. Glad to hear from you.
How are you today?
Well, can I ask a bit further more?
How people can do that? I mean if I close the window, people has to start up browser then enter the address and sign in themselves. Of course PC can remember my email address and password. But I always make sure they don't do it. I mean when I use Hotmail, there are a couple ticks box which asks me if I want to make my Email and Password remembered automatticlly. Of course I don't want to.
In my case, is that still important to sing out???

I often sing out when I am on the Internet, but only because I am usually the only one home. I prefer show tunes, because they have that rousing razzle-dazzle feel to them, and they seem to make my connection run faster, too. In addition, they are also often easy to perform using the rhythmic buttocks slapping method.

Ahem.

At any rate, as far as signing out goes, what Slime said above holds: if you do not share your computer with anyone else, it is not generally a big deal, but if you are on a public (shared) computer, it is important to sign out.

Also, with a lot of these communicator programs, closing the window (black-x-ing it) doesn't close the connection, just the interface. You may well still get other people messaging you - including (and in particular) those annoying "spam whores" selling pr0n sites. Best to select "sign off and exit" from the menu when you're done.
