In approximately one hour, men in electricallly insulated suits will come to disconnect me. I will have no contact with the outside world for an unspecified amount of time.

Tomorrow, I will move to a new residence, along with my wife, who could care less (or at least a lot less than I) whether we have contact with the outside world. She humors me, though, because she knows what I'm like when I'm disconnected.

If all goes well, I will be reconnected in my new locale sometime Friday morning, local time. If all does not go well, people may die. I pray to God that all goes well.

Shokko-Man has left the building...

The men, they do not come. I do not know why. Perhaps they are taunting me...

Wait, I hear footsteps... a knock at the door...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

He's off to deliver therapy in the alternative dimensions ...

clad only in a hastily constructed, and loosely fiitting, silver lurex suit, and brandishing a snapped off lightning rod in his left hand, our hero, last hope for the future of true insanity, strides forth ...

shock on ... SHOKKO-MAN !!

He'll be back (preferrably said a a really dumb Austrian accent)

along with my wife, who could care less

I am shocked and apalled that such a linguistically anal retentive (err...I eman.. 'gifted' ) person as your self would so carelessly mis-state this phrase. On top of being one of my biggest pet peeves, it simply makes no sense -

She couldn't care less. Couldn't. If she could care less, then that's not much of a statement. I don't understand when this phrase all of a sudden began being misused.....everyone was fine and then bam! Nobody says it right anymore...

.

Ok, I feel better =)

Suho1004: Good luck with the move - as South Korea is one of the most connected nations in the world I'm suprised you haven't arranged any intermediate connection to get your fix. Anyway it'll be a nice holiday for you - I'd imagine your better half will probably object to your jamming a work in the eletrical sockets to get your 'buzz' while you are away from your basement

Nerd? No no no no no....

See, a nerd would be greiving over vague and minor semantic issues.
This is a very basic, very diametric difference -

Either you could care less, or you couldn't.
You know - Yes, or....no.

Wes - got any torches handy?

I'm with you too on that... But then English is naturally screwed up anyways...

And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it?

And back on topic, good luck with the move Suho.

Well yes, but those things are inherent flaws or ambiguities in the language.

And yes, *this* post may push me into nerd-dom, but I must insist - this is a far more simple and straightforward issue: you can, or you can't. It's not a play on words, not a switch of meaning, it is simply people outright saying the wrong word.

And it makes me want to beat people with large heavy objects. Repeatedly.
And I am very surprised to see our revered linguist fall prey to this disease.

I spent a moment or trying to decide whether you were actually trying to make a point or just being silly.

If a point, I don't get it. If silly....I don't get it

What he's saying is that if you could care less, then you possess some level of caring above zero. If you don't care at all, which is what people mean when using the phrase in question, then you care zero -- it is not possible to care less. Thus, you couldn't care less.

LEVEL OF CARING
-------------------
5 - Cares a Lot
4 - Cares a Fair Amount
3 - Is Somewhat Concerned With
2 - Doesn't Spend a Lot of Energy Thinking About It
1 - Barely Gives a Damn
0 - Doesn't Care at All (Couldn't Care Less)

Scientists have now discovered a level of caring below zero. The neg-one caring level is what happens when you come out the other side and start actively opposing. However, this in itself denotes a level of caring above zero and the theory of care-culus has been completely revamped in order to account for this.

Oh, and you CAN divide by zero. We just don't let you.

Actively opposing? Don't you have to care about something to oppose it?
edit: silly me. that's what you said. grr.
