"desktop recorder"?

Do you mean a screen capture utility? A sound recorder?
And why do you need this for a Quicktime movie?

Well, if you're running a Windows machine, you can simply press Alt+PrintScrn, and that will put a screencap in your clipboard. Nothing fancy of course, but you can always crop it to your needs. On a Mac, I believe the key combo is Command+Shift+3.

If you need something with more options, I'm sure there's plenty of freeware on the internet that does this. Most imaging software also comes with a this feature.

Ah. You really meant "desktop recorder", didn't you?

I can't think of anything like this off the top of my head.

Try doing a google search on "screen recorder" or some variation of it.
Something like these?

I'm sure if you do find a good one, though, that it won't be free
