What is the preferred app for listening to on-line radio?

Since changing OS to win2k pro I can't listen to anything. Keep getting this win media player error.

"Cannot open. Please verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."

I'm using version 6.4.09 and I'm not so sure I want to upgrade to the latest version so recommendationbs would be appreciated.
thnx

Might be best to upgrade, I run on Windows 98 SE and have no problems uses the Radio Stations there. But I do prefer the link that is provided in the Favorites Section of your Internet Browser (Might be Internet Explorer only) over the Windoes Media Player.

I've never used the Media button that is next to the Favorites button on the "Standard Buttons" bar, so that might be worth a shot.

NJ: It depends on the radio - I know the BBC got a lot of flack for only using Real player and that is quite a popular format for streaming radio. Then again WinAmp may suffice for some broadcasts.

I used to run a company called Resist Multimedia where we streamed an actual set of radio's online. Let me tell you something, WindowsOS sucks. Period. And I use Win98. Mac is best. Screw Microsoft. Enough said.

WMP 9 series for general use, RealPlayer for listening to the BBC, and I have just installed WinAmp2 so that I can listen to Radio Tribulation There is a newer version of WinAmp but it's larger and has a lot of features I don't need yet.

Yep, Windows Media PLayer for almost everything and Real Player for radio stuff, but I really don't like Real Player.. it seems want to upgrade itself every 5 minutes and makes connections that make me suspicious. Having said that I like listening to Tokyo radio and stuff from far flung corners of the planet...

For BBC Radio... I use... the radio

I've never tried that Xpirex (RealPlayer for global radio) I'm off to give it a spin now. I too don't like RP for the same reasons you gave.
I listen to archive programmes on the BBC online, because I always seem to forget the time and miss them.

I use Winamp 3 for totally diffrent reasons (over 2), but run WMP7 for radio, since I'm wary about downloading WMP9.

I've just tried RealOne Player for radio and hated it Stoopid adverts,
NoJive, another factor to consider is what speed internet connection you have. I still can only get 56(put the kettle on while you wait for the page to download)K so the only kind of internet radio I can realisticly listen to is the pre-recorded stuff thats on offer. I listen to that using WMP 9 and it works fine for me

Thnx ppl.

ok I'm doing something wrong here. Found winamp 2.72 on an old disk I had hanging around. Played a music cd just to make sure that part is working....and it is. But I get nothing when I enter a url in the playlist. Not even an error message. Any clues?

Tao: My connection is what the local cable company calls 'lite-speed' .. about 5 times faster than a 28.8 and about half the cost of a full connection.

Anyway I'm back to plugging away at winamp if you have any ideas...greatly appreciated.

**edit**

ok... just upgraded to wmp7. all seems well, in that I can actually listen to the radio but man is that one ugly UI.

thnx

Winamp 2.x should suffice for most internet radio. They have their own service called streamcast, or shoutcast, or whichever.

Be careful, though. You wanna stay away from the thing they call "Winamp3". See when you go to the Winamp site, look to the upper-right corner and click on the exploding number two.

I use Winamp 2.X for just about everything invluding movies (Now and then, DivX player).

ShoutCast is probably one of the best sounding streaming audio's out there I think, <3 Philosomatika and DI.fm

I recommend Winamp v2 to my listeners, and I use it myself. I use the Shoutcast Source to send the DJ stream to my server and the Shoutcast server to broadcast.

Taobayee there is a big difference between Real Player and RealOne Player. I don't use the RealOne player because of all the junk and adds and other stuff. The RealOne is the update to RealPlayer. I'm not sure if you can still download the older version but it's easy to find on and older windows disk.

Very strange. I swear I entered another reply yesterday but when I just returned ... no sign of that reply. So I'll try again...

Do I need a plug in for winamp 2.x in order to connect to radio.... and what possible conflicts could there be when both wmp7 and winamp2.x show up as 'working properly/ no conflicts. ? Poor wording there but you know what I mean=)
thnx

you shouldnt need any plugin to listen to shoutcast radio just click on the link for the station you listen to, i use winamp(2.91 the most recent on their site) to stream radioparadise at work all day everyday and it works great.

clicky for rp

winamp should fire up and start playing the stream, then you just save the playlist on the desktop and there you have it.

Ez: Thnx for the link. winamp did kick in and work but there's a big problem with the buffering and I can't see where you change the buffer size. Clues? =)

Nojive:

Your connection might be fast, but not fast enough to handle streams. I did look up 'lite-speed connection' and it's seems to a little slow, but ya never knew till you try out more testing on other streams. Anyway Wimamp is fine, (ie. starting up & trying to buffer/connect to a stream). To change the buffer setting in wimamp do:

CTRL+P, plug-ins>output and click on DirectSound outout, then Configure. Click the buffering tab and set it there.

My only advice is (since I listen to internet radio all day long on cable connection) is try the list of shout cast connections 128k, 56k, 24k if using wimamp and see which is the best with out skips, If not using try real player/one and WMP at different speeds too, but really I would up date WMP to 9, as windows still keeps a version of 6 on the machine for some reason, but WMP is better for streaming and might help.

For a big list of radio stations head over to the FAQ (which does need updating with some new stations )

If you can't connect to say a least 10 radio stations at one at a time, tested at different speeds, then it's your connection and might not be able to handle it or to have good sounding (a least 128K) internet radio, which is a shame.

Edit: Added buffering setting thing, thingy.

Copey: Thanks... found it. sure don't make it obvious do they! =) Unfortunately I can't grab at 128 kbps. Too bad... but the slower 56k is tolerable.
thnx
