Ok I am going to Italy for a trip and well, My question is this. I am taking my LapTop (paid $4000 for it) to Italy as well. When I get to the AirPort you may want to send my laptop through their "scanner" (that x-ray thing). Is this safe for my computer, and my drives? And if they force me to before I can get on the plane and it does fuck my computer up, Would I be able to sue the airport for the computer and all the data lost on it? Get back to me because I am leaving day after tomorrow. Thanks.

I don't think that it will harm it, anyway laptops are allowed in airplanes.

no, it won't hurt your laptop. if it doesn't go through the x-ray machine...it doesn't go to italy. it's quite simple. and no you cannot sue them. they've got a nifty lil disclaimer in front of the x-ray machine.
i'd be more worried about someone snagging it on the other side before you get to it. THAT happens quite a bit.

when i came back from australia, i carried my HD in my carry on luggage. i TRIED to not let it go through the machine...but they had other ideas. it didn't hurt it at all.

BD: Yep what Lacuna and Lil Lacuna said - the biggest risk is having the thing stolen. I'd seriously think whether you need to take $4k worth of computer with you and if you do need it back everything up and make sure you have good insurance.

Italia !!??
Risky.
Take care, Italy is a dangerous country for any 4k stuff.
I know.
I have been there.
I have seen it.
It's just like Brazil.
Good luck.

They have two kinds of security scanners , one will kill your hard drive the other will do it no harm. Tell them you have a laptop and they will pass it through the appropriate scanner, and you will be fine. I have passed through countless borders with laptops and have suffered no ill.

But Italy? yes been there too.. have you insured your laptop against theft or robbery? Be careful...

Dracusis: Yes. The man on the left is clearly an Italian. I don't know what they teach you youngsters in school these days.

I don't know what Xpirex is talking about with two scanners but the one at the security gate won't hurt your laptop in the least. Just don't take any high speed film through it.

In the past couple of years I've gone through hundreds of those silly things and my laptop hasn't suffered at all. (Well, except once when I dropped it. Thank god for company laptops...)

Just remember to pull it out of your bag before you send it through.

Ok, first there are general metal detectors, and then a thing called an MRI scanner... and the other one is a three-dimensional CT scanner or computer tomography (CT) scanner... and finaly maybe a KVP ULtra high level X-Ray Scanner... the metal detectors are not at all healthy for your machine and the MRI will practically format your hard drive. So when you get there just ask them
