I have a friend who has emailed me (through a third party application)
she recently bought a new ibook but when trying to connect to her email she gets a message saying
cannot connect to pop port 110
details are sparse at the moment. I have searched the apple knowledge base but can't find an answer to this.
can anyone make any suggestion?

This has nothing to do with Apple and/or iBook. The pop3 (port 110 is used for pop3 service) mail server that's used for receiving mails is either not working anymore (or temporarily) or it's located on another address. I suggest that your friend contacts her ISP and ask their technical support for exact details how to set-up e-mail...
