Who's out there in the east and 'on' the east coast of america to give us a reasonable and valid view of what's going on.... and how you are making out?

Nope, just watching with a mix of interest and concern from California. My guess is that the East Coast got jealous of all the national attention Calfornia's getting from the Recall.

Yeah, watching the news a bit. New York (Manhattan?) is nuts. They are talking about power coming back in some of the southern suburbs of Cleveland. I can't imagine if the power outage continues into the night in the bigger cities.

We are living in Memorial Drive, Charles River is my neighbor, the view is beautiful, be it summer, winter, autumn or spring. I guess I will never live again in such a beautiful place. CFB - just a s a side note: the type of power generator is almost irrelevent in most of these cases.
It's the power grid that the energy is fed into that tends to casue the problems.

You'll note that some of the areas effected draw their power from hydroelectric sources

Man what a test of just about everything related to emergency and essential services.
A lot of people seem to be right on the edge but hangin'in there. Overnite will tell the tale i guess.

The windsor-detroit border crossing ground to a halt. The economic whack from that alone is huge. 10k trucks & 1 Billion dollars trade a day.

Will be interesting to see what comes out of all this. dubbya is already talking about a massisve upgrading of the powergrid. That came after hilory got a goood headstart at bashing the administration...and a foromer wig in the u-s energy industry described the u-s as 'superpower with a 3rd world grid.'

It's going to take days for everything to get back to normal and it all comes on day one of a heat wave.

Can you imagine the havoc if the infrastructure was actually damaged.

Emps, does this count as brownie points for the US reducing its overall energy consumption?

But seriously, what a massive outage. I thought they were supposed to restructure the grid so these cascading outages wouldn't happen anymore. It will be very interesting to see if any heads roll for this. I'm also wondering whether or not there may have been a terrorist element to this that the government is not willing to reveal at this time. Anyone heard anything about the actual cause of this that's been verified yet?

(Paraphrased.) "... This is what everyone had feared from Y2K a short time ago, which didn't happen, of course. And this just on the heels of the computer worm making its way around. We have no word that it has anything to do with this, but we are, of course, still getting information in ..."

We got hit at around 4:15 yesterday here in Ontario. Power came back sometime during the night here.

We were instructed to treat every intersection as a 4-Way stop, mind you traffic was a mess at Rush Hour but it was moving.
Not to call any Emergency Service unless absolutely necessary.

Unplug and turn everything off in case of a power surge when the power would come back on.

Interesting observations:

without cash - you were dead in the water !!
Cellphones were jammed because of the increased traffic.
the only phones that worked were the old-fashioned rotary and early push button ones.

General view by many people here is that is was Sabotage - who knows at this point.

People did have a hard time dealing with the heat, it was around 30C yesterday and with the humidity it felt like an oven at times.

It will be very interesting to find out the what and why.

I'm curious... anyone here equipped for emergencies?

Out here on the earthquake belt of the west coast we've been told we should be able to sustain ourselves... alone... without help for a minimum 3 days.

So how would you make out? Would you be able to go it alone for 3 days or would you be clogging the 9 1 1 lines... adding to the problem?

played pioneers? good reason to introduce the kids to camping at an early age! catch them in their "i want to help/learn" stage just gathering wood has many benefits - (leave the green ones, those are good for smoke signals. we're going to cook so we need the dry ones.) the little ones gather the smaller twigs for kindling and the older ones gather bigger pieces of wood. everything is used, hence everyone learns (s)he is needed, esteem grows and knowledge of the real world (outside of a city) grows too! plus the added benefit of doing things as a family - all working/playing together!

My mom and I were just in NYC during this outage trying to catch a bus to the Newark airport for my flight to Germany... We went out of the hotel at about 4, sat at the stop to wait, and at about 4:10 or so traffic lights went out.. everything clogged up.. we heard later that additionally, our bus got in an accident about a block or two away. A series of either unfortunate mishaps followed, and we ended up basically being stranded on the sidewalk for 4 hours... I was late for my flight by *half* an hour.. (plus what it would take me to get through security etc.)

I was very pissed. Luckily, we managed to nab the last room in a hotel in New Jersey near EWR, stayed the night, and I got on a rebooked flight 24 hours later, despite yet a few other mishaps. Wee, I totally wish that that had happened, say, 10 hours later or something... at least until we were off the ground..sigh.

But alas the day of, the power began going back on all around us, and by departure time it was clear we'd be going. We had a great vacation...Good to be back with the power on.
