I know there are programs which can compare files to see if they are duplicates. I also know that since most of the online world has amassed collections of MP3s through a multitude of sources (Online Sharing, CD ripping etc.) That they're are programs that can find duplicate mp3s based on ID3 tags and song signitures etc. These programs can find 2 files with the same song even if the bitrate and other factors are different. Is there such a program for image files? Lately most of my photoshop time has been spent downloading images and modifying them for a photomosaic poster I want to make. I've been editing each image quite a bit. (Setting the aspect ratio to 4:3, getting rid of borders and misc. text that wouldn't look good on a photomosaic etc.) Sometimes I find I've got duplicates, but since I get these pics from many online sources and I've edited them quite a bit I know the files aren't anything alike (Jpeg settings could be completely different, maybe I got an 800x600 from one site and a 1000x800 from another that cropped a little differnt that the 800x600 etc.)

So are they're any proggies that could help me manage this collection and root out similar files? I've still got a lot of work ammasing pictures too. I've discoverd that 859 images is pittance compared to what I need to make even a decent photomosaic. And to make one that doesn't alter the originals to help them fit.... *shiver*

I Googled on "duplicate image files" and found several that claim to be able to find duplicates among resized images, those with different filenames and different formats.

For grins, I ran one, Duplicate Image Finder against a directory tree with over 24,000 images with many known duplicates. It identified 1,062 sets as possible duplicates.

Because of unzipping and stuff, most of the duplicates in this tree are the same name and size, so that was no mean feat. You can do that with something like Z-Tree. However, it found several sets where the name or size (or both) were different but the images were the same. It seems to misidentify many B&W images as being the same.

In a more realistic test of client work-in-progress, it found 0 sets of duplicates in a directory of 16 images, each in TIFF, PSD and JPG formats, and with several resizes and crops of each image in JPG for a total of 77 files. Then again, after checking the docs, it doesn't do TIFF and PSD. Still teh results on JPG was disappointing

FWIW, I'd look at some of the others.

I'll have to give duplicate image finder a try. Thanks for the advice. I'll let ya know if it was any use
