Once again it is the conclusion to more worms fun...this time it was in the form of system32.exe

Im running WinXP Pro....Skaarjj checked with his installation of the same OS and found no such file exists. It had a rather weird sounding description so off I went and deleted it. Now when I log on the splash screen that comes up that you use to log in stays up for a while. This has been happening since I deleted this certain file. Once the splash screen goes, an error then comes up and says:

"Windows cannot find 'D:\WINDOWS\System32\system32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I have done all the virus scanning in the world, and checked quite often the processes that are happening and I can't see anything that is causing this to come up at start up. Ive even been to msconfig and regedit and disregarded anything to do with system32.exe (which there really wasn't). Im lost as to why it keeps coming up.

I do not have a system32.exe in my system32 folders. I have 1913 or 2149 or 2378 files in there but no system32.exe at all.

Try to search for some mention to it in the registry. If you find any key, delete them. You can try also those old but still present ini files.

I should have remembered it.

Thanks to Skaarjj (of course) I did some RegEdit editing...something I should have thought of to do more thoroughly. Google has always been my best friend as well. But sometimes you just overlook logic things. Ah well.....everything is ok for now. Cheers.

The simple steps (although this took me and Luxo quite a while to get done, this sucker spreads like crazy)

1. Create a system restore point
2. Open RegEdit (Start>>Run>>Regedit
3. Use the find function to find any reference to system32.exe
4. Delete all the keys you find that reference system32.exe
5. Close any running processes of system 32.exe (CTRL+ALT+DEL, go to the processes tab, and look through the list)
6. Delete system32.exe
7. Restart, and create a new system restore point.

if you got that into your system you are probably running too many services

run
services.msc

don't disable anything you aren't sure of.

in other points i would recomend turning off system restore, automatic updating, and allowing invitations. you turn those off in control panel -> system

one other thing, the best way to deal with a removed virus, whether by the delete key or by antivirus software is to use a regcleaner.

So, running on a lowest possible profile and having a clean system is all you should need.

jv16 powertools is an example. this used to be very good freeware, not sure if still is (either good or freeware) http://www.macecraft.com/

fix-utilities 4 is a must but, is not so good on winxp. never tried fix-util 5, but i'm sure it's out although it's from a different company..

and there's always norton system works. but that i don't recommend, since i'm starting to dislike the new norton fool proof style.

and there's always cnet http://download.com.com/sort/3150-2094-0-2-5.html?

here's a good site about services on winxp http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Arthemis: Thnx for that link to 'viper'... I lost that link when my HD went south...and I'd been trying to tweak win2kpro with not much success...and frankly was getting pretty pissed off. Anyway with just the straight ahead tweaks...I managed to free up quite a chunk of memory. only 458 megs of ram on my system and when I started the tweaking there was 178 megs free.... after... 273 free. processes running dropped from 41 to 36.... which is stilll waaay to many but heading in the right direction.

I knew my way around '95 & '98 reasonably well got right pissed off with Me and couldn't be bothered learning anything.... and while 2kpro seems a bunch better bla bla.... I'm still having a hard time getting excited about all the tweaking shit.
