This is really an eye opener.... Water or Coke?
We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before.

WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in
a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a coke or a glass of water?

I knew it was bad, but that's just silly!

Yeah, it sounds very cool until you actually get caught trying it, then you look like a ham (or a t-bone).

Earlier this summer I had some corrosion problems with the terminals on the battery in my truck, and I just happened to remember the ol' "coke will clean 'em" myth. Well, it does react with the corrosion and produces a nice bubble, but it didn't clean them nearly enough to allow a current to travel unimpeded. And the look my buddies dad gave me when he was fixing the situation for me and asked why the battery was so damn sticky made me feel as if I'd just gotten off the boat.

What's worse is I don't even drink Coke -- I drink MtnDew (the red variety). So, I felt doubly stupid when I realized I had spent a couple bucks on the drink solely for a benefit that was bunk.

Judging by the % of your body that is water, I'd say yeah - the info is pretty real.

Many of the coke bits aren't really negative...many of them are simple facts that (as far as I knew) were well known.
Some of them are simply stupid.

We eat and drink a great deal of acidic things, many of them purely natural. Acids are all around us all of the time. Some of them are necessary for us to live.

BTW, ginger ale is much better to cook a ham in.
And Coke makes a great ingredient in a marinade for beef.

The water info is pretty much spot on. Actually, I don't know about some of the numbers, but I do know a lot of people that drink just water and have greatly improved health as a result. No more squeaky knees or morning aches & pains. I know one guy that nearly got rid of his arthritis just by drinking only water.

The stuff about Coke is kind of out of context. Basic chemistry, bio-chemistry and stuff. The caffeine and sugar in Coke is more dangerous than the acid (at least that's my conclusion based on the research I've done).

*Definitely* ginger ale for a ham. And don't forget the pineapple.
Might have to try the hamburger thing. Thanks for the tip, DL.

edit: Don't forget that your stomach uses hydrochloric acid (HCl), one of the nastier ones around. If I remember correctly, HCl is even nastier than H2SO4 at the same concentration. Any chem-heads around here will to verify or deny that?

As DL and wj say everyone really does need to drink a lot more water - check your urine it should run fairly clear most of the time.

H2SO4 is 'nastier' (however you want to define that) than HCl as far as I'm concerned - nothing like HF but what is

^haha!

Just for all of your information, Beer is about 95% water. So, as long as it's good beer you're drinking, it's a good thing

WJ - to get more specific:
I will often marinate a steak or other such solid hunk o' cow flesh in a mixture of fresh squeezed lime juice, olive oil, a bit of coke (it actually helps suspend the action of the lime's acid which will "cook" the beef of it's own accord if left un-checked, as well as giving a nice caramel-ish sugary tint to it), some sliced onion, crushed garlic, fresh oregano or marjoram, and a toush of salt and fresh cracked black pepper.

Cooking it will usually be either on low-medium heat grill or in a cast iron frying pan in butter. If in a pan, at the end I usually degalze with a bit of prepared beef stock (or a touch of sherry), and some sliced crimini mushrooms. Always topped off with some more fresh cracked black papper.
If on the grill, I will often recreate the pan juice seperately (not quite as good, but the grilling of the steak makes up the difference!).

Never with A1 sauce.

Occasionally with some home made bourbon/worcestershire sauce mixture.

=)

It must be considered that Americans drink Coke with a lot of ice, so actually, they are drinking I believe that half coke, half water.
It's funny because I, being Brazilian, am not used to using so much ice in my coke or whatever substitute drink I am drinking. And then, most of the time when I ask the waiter to not put any ice in my soda, I usually get the following response: "Don't worry because it's free refill" - it sounds like, don't be cheap because you can have more coke without paying more. And I always reply to the waiter: "It's not about more or less coke, it's about temperature; I don't like it as cold as Americans do, capisci?".

Ahhhhhhhhh but beer also dehydrates you (hence the hangover) so.......

It is commonly thought that you need to actually drink the extra water as water.

viol: "half coke, half water" doesn't begin to describe it.

Here in the States, we don't "drink" Coke. We get ourselves a glass of ice cubes and use Coke to "fill in the cracks." Once you get good at it, you can serve off 5 "glasses" with just an ordinary 12oz can.

It's cheap, economical, and a great way to get ripped off at fancy restaurants. Those bastards

A French philosopher once said :

"When I see the damage water does to shoes, I can't imagine what it does to stomach"

Apart from that...From what I know about chemistry, those informations about coke and water are right. If it can help people to be healthier...

This is definatly true, its tastes like bbq, dunno about putting it in tinfoil tho, we have ham boiled in a half-litre of coke a good bit its really really good. wouldnt touch the "gravy" it makes tho, its really thick bubbly greasy stuff. mmmh pig.

I was dissapointed to find that tooth thing doesnt work, I heard it made the tooth squishy after a week which is more feasable, aw well. ..
/me sips coke.
