I've been given a lot of thought to spending a semester or two in Russia. The only problem with this is that I don't know the language at all. My school doesn't offer any courses in Russian. Does anyone know a good way to learn the language enough to be fairly competent in it, within about a year or so?

I'd appreciate any advice given.

About a year ago I purchased a ''Learn to speak German at home'' kit, and with and with alot of time and patience I managed to learn enough to go stay in Germany for 3 months. The Kit consisted of about 9 tapes in total, however, I must warn you; You need alot of patience! Also might be a bit harder to learn Russian from scratch, since German and English are fairly similar. The kit cost me about 50 dollars Canadien. Im sure you can find the same for Russian.

Anyways goodluck to you!

(emp is so fine)

No matter how much you see the pronunciation explained, it's not going to help until you actually hear it.

I know a lot of people who have used tapes to get at least a rudimentary ability to speak different languages, with a pretty good success rate.

all I am gonna say its BIG pain in the ass..its hard..the gramar and pronounciation....its almost imposible :P

I can only advice...if you really want to learn it.......you will need someone to practice it with....try to get a russian friend or something this might help....books are so so....if you want to do something good, you just have to practice it...

but then again books are pretty good for begginers, to understand grammar and such.

Why don't you move in with Ruski?

Living in Russia for a period of time sounds like it could be an awesome opportunity to learn. Why are you considering going there? Any particular reason? It sounds fascinating.

Bugs: a couple reasons...

First of all, Ruski lives next to me, in PR- not Russia
Secondly, He's in High School....
and
Thirdly, He lives with his mom...

... it's a combination of factors, really....

He's my tutor!! He's Mine!! *laughs maniacly* Muhuhuhahahahha!!!!!

Thanks for all of the replies.

Bugimus - If Ruski's mother doesn't mind the company I might do just that. Russian history has always interseted me. As a poli sci major, its political history alone would be worth the trip. Besides that I'm a big vodka fan.

lallous - I'll check out that kit. If I purchase it I'll let you know how it works out.
