I said a whole lot about their music... far more than I did about historical significance....

Surely you can find more than that to say....

Wow, I looked like an ass. My fault, I didn't even see your post. I was using the page up/down keys and must of hit it twice...or something. Anyways, I'm sorry for that.

1. By "simple music" I mean, well, music that isn't exactly complex. It has melody, beat, lyrics, guitar, drums but...well, not much else. All these insturments/parts are all played/used to acheive one single effect, and none ever really stand out; there isn't pauses in the music to accentuate the vocals, some nice finger-picking on the guitar as the vocals fade from the refrain to a verse. That kind of thing. It's, well, simple. But, I'll give you this: They did have rich melody, full chord progressions, their music was arranged nicely etcetera. BUT!: That is all.

2. Well, this showed my lack of knowledge about the Beatles. In truth, I haven't listend to them all that much, although, since this thread, they've sucked up about 60 bucks worth of my money and have occupied my CD player for about 70 percent of the day =). Yes, I do notice some solos, but I don't necessarily mean the triple-tracked, "squeeze as many notes into 5 minutes as God will allow" solo's, but just some good 'ol memorable guitar or drum work. Like in "What I Got," by Sublime. That guitar solo in the middle has played through my head so much, that I think I'll be on my deathbed and still remember it. Besides that, I like it. You know what, I'm not sure what I meant by articulate either. =)

3. I'll give you this: McCartney sounds, well, really good. But the guitars, well, they're fairly mediocre most of the time, with only some occassional highlights, and the drums...Most songs pre-White Album were horrible. And then they're Ringo...

4. Of course it is =) As I've listened to more Beatles, I've really begun to like Revolution (not number 9 =)) and A Day in the Life. And, I can sing most of those songs very well, thank you. I have an above average voice, and I've recently begun to take voice lessons. I know what you mean though. I'd also agree that most modern music doesn't come close to comparing with the Beatles too. But, then again, some do. In regards to your last statement: I just got to see Red Hot Chili Peppers live last month. They were awesome (although not up to their usual antics =)), and they really sounded just as good as their CD. Same as Rammstein, whos tours I always seem to miss. Listen to their live albums (although they obviously have less musical talent than the Beatles).

No worries. I just thought you were blowing it all off

Keep listening

Well, that's an awful lot. Again, I challenge you to find many modern performers in popular music who actually achieve this.

Now don't get me wrong...I like Sublime. But...talk about simple..??!
Yes, the guitar solo "stands out" becasue there isn't much else happening. There is not by any means any exceptional guitar playing going on there. To put it in your words "mediocre at best".

Both of the above statements go back to what I said about bands using a few tricks and common place music to make it seem there is more to what they're doing then there actually is.

Yes, McCartney has an great voice. But so do John and George. And they are all very competent guitar players, moreso than many bands today. No, you don't hear the flashy gimic-y crap that a lot of bands tend to throw out to make people think they can play - but that's not what makes a good guitar player. Again....no they aren't Clapton, or Hendrix, or Satriani, or John Friciante...
But they are most certainly better musicians than the members of Sublime
Ringo gets a bad rap. Yes, he's a terrible singer and should never have had any time at the Mic. And no, he's no Keith Moon, Ginger Baker or Mitch Mitchel...
But he's really not as bad as he's made out to be.

I've seen them a few times (last time was about 10 years ago though ) and I'll agree - they are a great live act. They have also had more than 20 years to perfect that live act - if they didn't have the talent, they more than likely wouldn't be around still. Nothing bad to say about them, musically.

Hmmm...."Rammstein", "Music". I don't get the association there... ( )

I'm glad that you are taking voice lessons and are a competent singer - that helps a person to appreciate what they are hearing. Always a good thing.
