Holy cow, if any of you don't have a Dreamhost account yet, now is the day to get it!!!! Dreamhost is offering their strictly business plan which normally costs $80/month for the price of their introductory plan ($10/month). This plan includes an SSL certificate and a Miva Merchant storefront license. Amazing deal! The even more amazing part is you lock in the price forever. Sounds too good to be true, and it is for existing customers like me who can't sign up for it. Frankly, i don't know how they can make money like this.

I hate to be a profiteer, but if you want to thank me for bringing this to your attention, I would be most appreciative of any referrals you could give me... my ID is 'dasil003' which you can enter when you're signing up. Otherwise you can always click the link at the bottom of the page to give a referral to ye olde Doc.

God I wish i could get that deal...

Wow, I hope they offer an upgrade for us current Dreamhost users

I'm not gonna post my ID since Jiblet posted this but I will say this, Dreamhost rocks! This is an amazing deal, to good to pass up. It is worth $10 a month just to have your own domain to send e-mail from if your a company or an individual.

I'm not much for asking for favors, but...

Someone with the money on-hand and a credit card willing to get this for me?

I'm working on getting the money together, but it will take a little too long. Also, I don't know anybody with a credit card willing to advance and transact.

I have a 60G Seagate internal IDE that I would like to part ways with for $70. I'll pay S&H.

Also, I've already got a few prospects for some extra money.

If you are willing, especially if you would like to buy my 60G HD, e-mail me ASAP.

~puppy dog eyes~

Then again, I'll understand if this doesn't happen.

edit:
Holy shit. I just found out that I've been sitting on something for years worth well over $500. Finding a buyer for that much shouldn't be a problem. And maybe, just maybe, that will tip the scales in my favor for an Asylumite do-gooder out there.

For a rampant database kinda guy like me...I don't like the fact that dreamhost limits the MySQL queries you can do in a month, plus I've heard some bad things about them from current customers, so I don't think I'll be taking this deal any time soon.

And it certainly is.
Take care, you get what you pay for.
There is no exception to this rule, specially in the webhosting industry.
I am yet to see a webhosting company that can sustain such deals as they promise...

skaarj: even with poor programming and a rampant database I doubt you could come close to topping their liberal connection/query limit.

viol: I got into a good deal on an account a few years back that was very similar to this one, "locked in" for the life of the account, and I can tell you they haven't welched on it.

I've been with Dreamhost for a while, 3 years? Now I have over 40 domains hosteds there, many accounts, many databases, many tables in em, many mail accounts. Bottom line, it all works, all the time. If you are smart, if you can afford it, and if you can put it to use, you should have no reservations about jumping on this deal.

If there's any negatives to Dreamhost it's that their focus on security and stability leaves you with less than 100% of the toys that are available on the many Red Hat out-of-the-box hosts, not much less, but less. Nothing that's ever thrown a curve that couldn't be worked around.

Not that I'm a salesman for them, just had to counter the speculations.

Wow Cyoung, those are amazingly cheap prices. Maybe Dreamhost is running this promo to compete with prices like that.

And Viol, I totally agree. In fact I was a little mad they were doing this because I wasn't sure how it would affect my service that I pay much more for. Nevertheless, my experience with Dreamhost has been so good in the past, and it's hard to imagine a better web admin tool, and every time I've contacted support they've gotten back to me within 2-3 hours, even on non-trivial questions.

My guess is that they just calculated that given the usage patterns they have seen over the past 6 years, they can afford to give a certain number of people this deal and in the end it should just increase their exposure.

Uhmmm, I was taking a closer look at that deal and it _can_ make some sense because it's available only for the next couple of days, or it can even end before.
It seems a good deal, really too good to be true, but maybe they are being serious about it. I have a domain, viol.com, that's not in use - I was using it to run a website here in my own computer but the University doesn't allow this anymore - and maybe I will give it a shot.
I'd like to add that to have SSL certificate one must pay extra 5 dollars a month.

EDIT: uhmm, I see a problem, there is a huge setup fee - $25 - for those that do not want to pay annually, and that's just my case. I really don't like paying one year in advance for a service I don't know, actually for almost any service...

Yeah, back before I had a host I didn't know what to do. Of course it's impossible to tell from a Web site anything about the reliability of a host: what their connection is really like, how is their server load for shared servers, how fast does tech support respond, etc, etc. The worst part is that many web hosts are great until you go over your bandwidth limit at which point they cash in on shady business practices, like what happened to http://www.nosepilot.com/ . So what got me onto Dreamhost was the fact that Doc hosts all his sites there, because I KNOW he's using the bandwidth.

However, I am still very curious about what Skaarjj's buddies have told him in terms of bad reports...

I believe that there is absolutely no web host co. that would accept losing money with an account for a medium to long period of time. If you pay 9.99 a month and start using the full 40GB monthly bandwidth, I doubt that dreamhost, or any other company, would allow that. They may allow for a short period of time, hoping that it's only temporary, but if you "insist", they will surely "have a talk" with you.

The deal is still good, not because of the "unreal" 40GB bandwidth (this is the most expensive part of the service, in my opinion) but because you get a lot of other stuff that I can hope that they will not care if you really use them to the limit.

Anyway, I would have already signed it but since I only pay monthly, and I don't like paying setup fee, specially at $25 dollars (almost nobody charges for setup fees these days...), I will probably pass (I'm still thinking about it).

Not allowed to do it if you have had an account within the past 90 days.

As for losing money on the bandwidth, I think it's the same business model as ISPs have used forever, they just make everyone pay for average bandwidth so that the high bandwidth users are subsidized by the low bandwidth users. Statistically it's a pretty reliable business model as long as you have a large user base, which Dreamhost definitely has. Besides, they already give everyone 20GB/month for $10. I think the expensive part of the deal is the security certificate and miva merchant license...

I have just signed for it. If everything goes okay, I will stop paying my current webhost. I will pay the exact same amount I pay today, US$ 9.99 a month, but I hope to have some more features to play with.
I hope I don't regret, I hope this doesn't turn into a NightmareHost.

Signed up yesterday, and I'm pretty pleased with the service so far.

I think I'll mostly use the shell accounts though, and a small slice of the bandwidth for a personal page. The setup fee isn't too bad, and I can handle the $10/mo. without too much of a problem.

We'll see if anything fishy turns up, but I'm happy with it. But, as always, caveat emptor.

you get a free liscence for miva, which is a storefront/shopping cart. That plan also includes a free geotrust SSL cert. You do indeed need to secure a merchant account and gateway at additional expense to you.
