icklepix.com is down, the server isn't as I can access it through my control panel stuffs that arent connected to my domain. So its my domain that isnt working, but its registered untill 2005. Anyone know what a REDEMPTION PERIOD is ? I havent gotten any emails about it, and cant login into namesdirect.com to see my details there. If a redemption period is what I think it is, can I register it elsewhere or will I have to wait 3 years ?

These are me whois details:

Domain Name: ICKLEPIX.COM
Registrar: NAMESDIRECT.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.namesdirect.com
Referral URL: http://www.namesdirect.com
Name Server: NS1.PHYR.COM
Name Server: NS2.PHYR.COM
Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 27-sep-2003
Creation Date: 25-jun-2000
Expiration Date: 25-jun-2005

Someone in the know.. please help.

If my sig appears I dont need any help:

We have done so.

Don't follow his example - seek real life help first.

That same thing happened to me a while back Hugh. I can't see your bunny so you're probably in redemption period. Basically (my understanding) you must have forgotten to renew it and it expired. Your hosting company paid to keep it alive but now you owe them.

Mine wanted me to pay like $100-some bucks to get it back. I just told 'em to stick it and got a new domain.

krets: I think your right, but I mean, I did pay about 3 months ago untill 2005 , which would be weird. icklepix.com just brings you to a Verisign crap

Skaarjj: I'd say your seeing it from your net temp files.

InI: no , I didnt do anything wrong, my hosting is workin fine actually.

Computers, It's all about the gremlins baby.

A new domain sounds good, but you all know how inconvenient that is, Im sick of "icklepix" .. I mean , wtf ?
dont want to spend any time thinkin of a new domain , ,eugh stress.

think I better contact the domain peeps , but how ... my email address is ....@icklepix.com

I've never used dotser so I can't say if they're good, bad or indifferent. Pretty site though.

As they come up for renewal, I've switched my domains from Network Solutions to GoDaddy.com. I've registered all my new domains there and I refer my clients to them too. And they're US$6.00 per year less than dotster.

The control panel is nice enough, although it doesn't support some features as NSI, like allowing the Technical Contact (me) to update a domain you don't own (my client's). I *really* don't like having my client's domain registry logins and they don't like me making them do it. It's my only complaint. Well, the site is pretty cluttered and ugly too.

On the other hand, they do stuff NSI doesn't. The (extra cost) private registration for instance. I use it on the domain for my writing pseudonym. A whois won't tell you squat.

The only caveat is that they try to sell you all sorts of shit during the checkout process. Pay careful attention, click "No" alot and it'll be okay.

I've used Dotster to register a few different domains and have had absolutly no problems with them at all.

I have one domain registered in goDaddy and the other registered in domaindirect. I don't like having both in the same place because if something bad happens, I can lose both (even if temporarily). I also don't like having my domains registered in the same company where I host them. So, if now my host is Dreamhost, I would not transfer any of them to Dreamhost domain registration service.
My only advice is: do not go for Network Solutions. They suck.

Well..... Another whois server coughed up your personal information plus...

Domain Name: ICKLEPIX.COM
Created on: 19-APR-01
Expires on: 03-JUL-03
Last Updated on: 04-JUL-03

On the other hand this is from their faq section....

Redemption Period:
This is part of the Registry's Redemption Grace Period. If the domain is not renewed, the domain is given a 30 day grace period before the domain is deleted from our system. During this time, the domain can still be renewed by logging into your account and renewing the domain. After the domain is deleted from our records, the Registry puts the domain in the status, "REDEMPTIONPERIOD". You can view this status by going to www.verisign-grs.com and searching on your domain.
During the Redemption Period, the Registry gives the owner of the domain one more chance to re-activate the domain. The cost to re-activate the domain is $99.95. The Redemption Period lasts 30 days. If the domain is not re-activated, the domain enters a "PENDINGDELETE" status. The domain will be purged from the registry database after being in this status for 5 calendar days. Only then will the domain be available to register as new.

Since they can hold onto the domain until 2005... Read that as your domain is being held for ransom. (Insert discriptive profanity here)

Jason

<EDIT>
Oh by the way... Is PHYR.COM your name server or theirs... If it is theirs, it is registered to dotster.com, which might mean that NAMESDIRECT.COM is just reselling dotster.com services... If thats the case, you might want to complain to them... (csupport@dotster.com)

They are atleast ICANN certified.

mmh, well if there gonna be looking for anything along the lines of $99 I'll go elsewhere, I havent recieved any reply from them, I think I'll got ahead with dotster.com as my friend is and has no problems, same as others above. phyr.com is my friends nameserver.

Thanks Nemesis for your input.

Unfortunately I doubt it. Somehow your ownership on the domain lapsed and so now the host owns it until you fork over the 99 bucks. It sucks man. Mine never even let me know it was going to lapse until one day I tried to get to my page and nada. I had to call them! Needless to say I was a tad miffed.
