Anyone know what the difference is between the two, and whether Pro is especially necessary?

I'm a knowledgable user (well, I can install anything under the sun and tweak the Registry), but is there anything that makes Pro worthwhile over Home?

If you're a knowledgeable user, I would recommend Win2000 instead of WinXP.

On pro you can join domains, on home you can't

Or if you don't want to spend the time reading all of those, then just take my advice and buy XP Pro.

xp pro has a lot of extra security features built into it. As I see it thats the main reason for choosing it over home edition. I use the home edition

i ru win2k now and have kinda the same thoughts moon shadow, the only drawback is that micro$oft is slowly easing up and will eventually discontinue support of 2000 according to things i've read.

Pro is the win2k kernel with all the xp toys built onto it. Home is the ME kernel with all the xp toys built onto it.

Which would you rather run, ME or Win2k? (The answer is not ME just so you know)

Go with Pro if you have to use XP. Otherwise, go with 2000.

I've used computers with both OS's, and I choose pro all the way.

I would like to point out that what MindBender said is wrong. Both XP Pro and XP Home are based on Windows NT kernel (there's no Windows 9x bullshit in it), the difference is just in some other extra gadgets outside the core system...
