The Apple web site says it all: http://www.apple.com/

I downloaded it. Aside from lacking a couple features here and there that I would like, I'm really impressed. It's got some neat auto-generated playlist features, and it makes it really easy to get music from people over my campus' network.

On top of that, I really like the music store. I haven't actually bought anything yet, but it's fun to browse.

Anyway, I strongly recommend at least checking it out.

Burn Satan iTunes! BURRRRNNN!!!! :P

Let's hope they took out that features that auto-deletes your mp3s from your harddrive when you remove them from your playlist. I just really loved that particular feature on the mac version. Someone needs to find out who is responsible for all those iApps and OS X and beat them bloddy with a sock full of quarters.... twice.

Heh, I've used iTunes in about every single major version, and it's never auto deleted them from my Hard Drive. If you're on a Mac, in OS9, try looking in your HD, Documents folder, iTunes, and see if you can locate them around there. When I delete something from a playlist, it just takes it out of the playlist but keeps it in my 'Library' (delete something from the library and it's gone from the playlists).

Actually, I think it's a similar location in OSX, just you have to go into users and open your username first, then follow documents to your music.

Personally, I'm a fan of almost all the iApps. (Except iCal and Address Book, which are just useless to me because I'm not someone who keeps track of that stuff on their computer.)

My friend had a problem with iTunes reorganizing his music folders. Maybe that's related to your problem of iTunes deleting files when you delete them from your library. In his case, the solution was to not tell iTunes where his music was stored, and to simply add the files into the library from a remote location.

The only problem I ever had with iTunes was it once seemingly got a few files confused, so some tunes in one playlist became tunes that I had recently imported, but that was easily fixable by deleting those files, using the "get track names" thingy on the existing files, and doing it over. Maybe it's a related problem to the one above. *shrug*

That's probably one of the worst problems I've had with my Mac, ever, heh.

Itunes is a good program, but I use Audion. Both are nice programs, unfortunately Audion is Mac only.

Slime: Thanks for that - I've grabbed it and passed the information on.

Its working nicely just one thing though. I was having trouble getting WA2 to autoplay CDs:
http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum1/HTML/008122.html

but WA3 would. However, it wasn't working with the plugins properly and I have removed it but WA2 doesn't appear to be offered as an autoplay option

Anyway is there a way to get iTunes to autoplay CDs in XP?

[edit: Can this be done by some serious editting of the Registry? ]

[edit2: Ahhhhhh I had a check in the Registry under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AudioCD

and it is all set there although it only works on the CD drive and not the DVD drive and it doesn't automatically start playing that is progress ]

[edit3: This also discusses AutoRun and getting devices working in it:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/01/11/Autoplay/default.aspx

Scroll down to "Autoplay V2 Registration Mechanism"]

And for those of you who are artistically inclined you can get the iTunes Visual Plug-ins SDK for Windows from here:

Emps: Not sure if it does things differently than the registry hack, but have you tried TweakUI?

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

My Computer > Autoplay > Handlers

Or in the autoplay dialog, isn't there a checkbox "always use this action" or something to that effect? It is possible somehow...

kuckus: Bingo - that did it. I was able to add WA2 in there. Also adding in an iTunes one seems to have forced the DVD to acknowledge that too (it also brings in the iTunes option which was only showing via the CD drive).

Thanks

No problem, glad it worked =)

I never really understood why they don't include TweakUI with Windows - it's good for so many things...

I'm not a power user of ANY mp3 player/music asset manager

But I like iTunes, and i've found the Store easy and convenient.

Since they have iPod for PCs, it seemed sensible to port iTunes. Good for everybody!

downloaded and installed, liking it here so far. there's an option under the prefs for autoplaying cd's that i would think works, i dunno.

a word of caution tho, a buddy of mine installed it and ended up uninstalling it. upon deinstallation it completely crashed his system and he's have to reinstall the OS and everything else from the ground up. hoping this is an anomaly, but be careful nonetheless.
