For about a week not I've had some rather agressive pop-ups on my computer that are begginning to bug the absolute fuck out of me. About every two to three minutes, I get a horde of pop-ups that take me about 20 seconds to close down. I ran ad-aware, but couldn't find anything. What else, short of reformatting, should I do?

Try getting rid of them with Spybot. Get that program.

Under tools in Spybot click on Hosts to append your hosts file - That will block a lot of pop-ups.

Also, there is whats called the 'supertrick' that blocks a whole lot more http://www.andreasroom.com/HowTo/KLhosts.aspx

And e-dexter http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/eDexter.html will replace missing ads with a transparent gif.

Have you tried a browser with built in popup blocking? I don't get popups when using mozilla, mozilla firebird or opera.

If you want to keep IE, definately run the above mentioned programs, and append your host file. My brother just got a virus (on xp, I didn't get it on the lan some reason) that all it does is add popups

You can also try using Ctrl+Alt+Del and taking a look at the active processes. I've found a few that way and then done some research online to see where they came from.

Of course, I haven't had to worry about that since switching to Firebird. I'm not bashing IE, I still like the browser, Firebird just has too many other things that IE doesn't even offer without using 3rd party plugins.

I have tried but don't really recommend the hosts file trick. Using good ad and syware (ad-aware and spybot) plus a good popup blocker (google) is for me a much better solution. The hosts file makes ads served from a list of domains turn around to your loopback IP (127.0.0.1) The problem with this is that all your ads will load as a page not found error which seemed to me to cause a performance issue.
