I am trying to make some DVD's, and i am gettin increasingly annoyed with the "hey stupid, you gotta use THIS template to make your dvd" software that came with the drive.

Any experience making DVD's?

I have also been trying to use a program called Impression SE by Pinnacle sys. I think it used to be Minerva or something like that. (and i think SE stands for Stupid Edition, can i get a verification on that?) They thing I like about Impression is that the navigation can all be made in PS... but i have yet to get it to actually work.

Any DVD burning resources or links?

I'd recommend Nero Vision Express. Not one of the other 7 ot 8 programs I tried before was able to produce a DVD without something going wrong (I have no idea how these apps can be sold for 50+ ? ...), but with Nero, there weren't any problems at all. DVD menu customization is much easier as well, and you can actually change the layout, images, colours etc. of the default templates.

They have a free trial version somewhere here:

ever use Roxio dvd builder?

I just did. it worked.

and all my video looks compressed. Is that just a dvd thing? Normal people would not see the compression i dont think... but dang skippy, i cant live with it. (i was watching it on a bigish tv)

You notice any such compression? It looks kinda like a jpg, because of how the picture is broken into smaller square data bits... uh... copy?

Wide shots were really the bad ones... colors and all are great though...

And nero, i dont think you can buy just that one product, and nero has not been nice to me in the past.

That's generally a symptom of a low data-rate in the encoding

I used to have a cpy of Minerva Impressions that came with my Pinnacle card, it sucked.

You used an uncompressed AVI sure but the output was not AVI. Take anything I say with a grain of salt as I've never made a DVD before but I believe it's normally output using some kind of mpeg(2?) compression for the video. I'd poke around for export compression settings in your software.
http://www.videoguys.com/ may be a cheasy looking site, but it used to have lots of good info and reviews a fews years ago, poke around in there and lemm know if it's any good any more, I haven't played with video in quite a while now.
