Those who read /. might allready have seen this, but for the others: Article on Microsoft and search engines. The article seems biased, but it is a nice read.

Favourite quote from the article:

quote:
"I want to make sure (a user) can't get through ... an online experience without hitting a Microsoft ad," he said.

Ever tried to really find something on the Microsoft site?

I end up using Google.
So does the Microsoft staff apparently... to search their own site.

nuff said.

Good point! There was a comment made in a thread (DHTML & Javascript) about a menu system being modeled after Microsoft's navigation, to help inexperienced users .... I was too stunned to reply.

So how much do you think 12% might be? It doesn't rattle... I know that for sure.

Yes, that was mentioned in a couple of articles covering the mediaplayer thing as well. Hopefully a verdict has been passed before the new Windows is released forcing M$ to add the ability to change the MSSearch program to any other search engine. So the user can chose to use Google or Yahoo instead. Don't mind if the default is MSSearch as long as the users are aware of the choices they have and it should be easy for them to change it.

I'm stunned that you think that practice would be a bad idea. We use windows all the time, as do most people. Making DHTML menus like the windows menus is a very smart thing to do if you want to minimise confusion.

I'm constantly surprised how quick some people are to hate anything microsoft.

I think somehow he was too stunned over the fact that anyone would want to model their site's navigation over the microsoft website's navigation. The microsoft website's navigation is the first thing I assumed when I read about that. If it's window's havigation that the comment was refering to, then that is not such a bad thing. If it's the website, well, may god have mercy on their souls.

I think they make a great product. I find it to be stable and very easy to use - two things I value most in using software.

I find ms products stable after configuring them a lot. They certainly are not satan, as some other developers make worse crap, but i dont find their products to be that good either.

I find on average that my Windows XP machine crashes just as seldom as my Mac OSX and Gentoo Linux machines. While, earlier versions of Windows might have crashed slighty more often, I never found it to be a BIG problem.

Also, I just don't believe if Linux and OSX were expanded to run on all the same hardware that Windows XP does, there would they would do it significantly better.

Problem with microsoft is not that they make unstable code.

Anyone who examnied their reently relased source code conceeds that finally they have begun to write good code.
The problems with Microsoft can be summarised as such (not an exhaustive list).

1) Monopoly
2) Crazy technologies that keep changing (.NET, COM, ActiveX, WankOZone etc).
3) Monopoly
4) Stifiling innovation
5) Monopoly
6) The company is too large
7) Monopoly
8) Bill Gates at the helm
9) Monopoly
10) They have pissed off too many people to be treated seriously
11) Anticompetative, coding for their apps to perform better on the OS.
12) Non disclosure of source, NSA backdoors etc.

Empires rise and fall, Microsoft will too.

Personally I have spent too many nights in my server room at 1AM fixing up problems caused by some
zitty fuckwit doing krazy things to the server code to respect M$. I say, burn in hell Billy.

PS. Microsoft is not a software company anymore.
Anyone who has had a look at their profit/loss sheet can see that they make more money
per annum managing their incredible wealth than writing code.
They dont need to write another line of code to remain a megacorporation. Ever.

I hate microsoft and their shady tactics, but some of these things I feel compelled to comment on:

1) Actually, I don't think so. Not in the traditional meaning of the word. The world just seems to have gotten caught up in it.
2) It's called progress, my friend. Why does new CSS not work in old NN4.7?
3) Big Successful Conglomerate... not the same thing
4) ok, yes- Stifiling innovation
5) ... and it is very rare for the USDOJ to actually know what they are talking about.
6) So? So is FisherPrice
7) Fun game, though
8) Not the worst of cretins, but pretty 'up there'
9) Coca Cola is not a monopoly, and if they charged $50 bucks a can, most people (me included) would probably still buy it.
10) ...So why not join the bandwagon?
11) True and inexcusable- Anticompetative, coding for their apps to perform better on the OS.
12) The only real reason to hate their products, but they are hardly alone..

...the #1 reason why I hate them is making softmodems unavailable to linux... for this they should burn in hell..

They are an evil-intended, predatory, and bad sofware company- but they are hardly the labels that most people brand them with (such as 'monopoly' and 'empire')..

.... you want to talk monoply? I can get Linux (in many, many flavors) and OSX at the drop of a hat, but why can't I get HBO and *NOT* MTV?!?

.... my local cable company (and probably yours, too) is a fucking monoply run by a bunch of evil fuckers. Boy, would I love to bring the hammer of the world down on *them*.
