I was wondering if maybe you could help me out with learning that or a tutorial or something that would get me jump started on making my costum pop up windows. Thanks in advance .

InSiDeR: Have a look at his code. He is dynamically rewriting the page contents.

Hey InSiDeR,

I don't have time to write a tute for that particular code. However, if you are willing to look at my code and learn from it, I would be very happy to explain it as you have questions.

I was inspired to write that particular window style after seeing a few other web sites doing some similar stuff. I wanted to prove to myself that I could write it from scratch and actually *understand* how it was being done. What I like about what I've got so far is that multiple windows can exist on the page and that they are collapsable with a smooth movement.

The problems with the page are a bit numerous. It is currently not compatible with NN6. The code is pretty bloated. It is not as easy to set it up as it needs to be. In other words, I would like to automate the actual box instances and not have to hard code them into the page. The windows are *not* resizable.

All of those problems can be fixed and I intend to get to that in future.

So please feel free to examine the code and by all means learn from it and I'll do my best to explain how it works.

To be perfectly honest with you bugs i have looked through ur source many times and i cant seem to understand it because i hardly know any javascript. I even tryed dhtmlcentral.com and cant quite get everything working. So im very confused now. I understand that you know alot about this subject, and as for NN6 i really dont mind if it doesn't work for that browser. I didn't ask you to write a tutorial for it either, i simply just wondered if u had some ideas or links or suggestions that my help me out...... Well I really can't say anything else so I'll just wait untill you reply.

JavaScript is a damn complex topic, since there are a lot of different ways of doing things, which work differently for different browsers. For the basics, take a look at www.webmonkey.com and find their JavaScript tutorial. I don't know if it's the best on the web, but it helped me.

InSiDeR,

I had a thought driving home the other day after reading your last post. I was thinking it would be cool to use you as a guinea pig and start from scratch in explaining basic dhtml concepts. Everyone keeps talking about added more tutes to the GN and maybe this would be a good way to precipitate that.

The problem, as always, is time. I was thinking we could come up with a few basic things to do on a page and start from there and build on them. But honestly this is what Doc is doing with his znippets. I believe he is working on something where you can pick and choose his znippets and be able to put them together in a building block fashion.

Hmm... so what do you think? Would you be interested in learning the concepts a little at a time (which is of course the only way to really do it) or would you prefer to just be handed some working code for use on your pages? Because dhtml really requires a bit of effort to really work with properly.

Hey, just to chime in on this one, my tutorials all started out as personal emails, where I tried to explain things to people as they asked. After the 10th or so time, I'd finish typing and say "damn! That's a good explanation." So I would add screen caps to it and they became Hands-On. (There's still credits to certain good question-askers peppered throughout.) Sounds like a great idea, Bugs!

Well bug as of now I am trying to learn things a little bit at a time. However, I do try to take scripts (non copyrighted) from other pages and work them and modify them and see what I can do. So both would work.

I am trying to get to the point where i can memorize all the commands and not have to pull up a refrence and copy and paste it. Just like writing my own scripts. I have written a few little style sheets but nothing like image rollovers or anything.

Im not quite sure what you were asking. I think it was that you wanted to use me for something on the GN but i kind of got confused. Right now I am listening to my music (very loud & hard core), so my mind isnt stimulated entirely on reading this post. Oh well, I'll come back later and see if I can understand it. And yes I would like to help you out for some projects. Actually im alright with html, I could provide another tut for the gurus on something like a lil mini tut for "onMouseOver" style sheets for text links or somthing.

I'd love to help out .

*hehe, I'm watching 'The Langoliers'. Good movie, btw*

um... aren't we running the risk of creating a script-kiddie-ish asylum? complete with questions like: "Um, I dun wanna learn any code, but can anyone give me a script which can do this or point me to where I can pirate a WYSIWYG editor that can?"

err..... I like the "read the script and analyze it" point, but when lamers are drawn here, Just remember that I get the crystal ball award...

Uhh, Petskull I certainly hope your not implying that I just asked for a tut without even trying, because I did try very hard to get the script to work. .

whoa, Ins!
excuse me... please don't think for a minute that I was calling you a lamer.... I'm talking about eventualities of the not-so-distant future. I wasn't refering to anyone pressently in the Asylum (I think).

...And asking for tuts is awsome.... that's what this place is all about. It's the asking "Do this for me so I don't have to think"; stuff like code and "Hey, draw this for me"
I think that when some one asks a 'How?' instead of a 'Gimme' it's an enriching experience for all of us...

(IOW, sorry if I insulted ya, bro)

InSiDeR: Thats a great offer from Bugimus - I advise you to accept it without delay. Perhaps Bugs could work what you two kick around into a tutorial at the end of it - we all win!!

Cool! Let's see what we can come up with.

I've been particularly more busy than usual lately with other things but I should be able to work on this soon. This just might be the best way to flesh out some useful tutes and get some of the most frequently asked stuff dealt with.
