I have a client looking for a virtual tour of their showroom. I am stumped! I'm pretty sure I can piece the images together and use a system like Bugimus' seemless DHTML. Isn't it better if you use a panoramic camera, or one of those 360 degree cameras for that? Can you rent these? Is it expensive? Would Bugimus' panning applet be the best to use?

Thumper: Well Bugs' panorama script is just JavaScript although I presume a more complex version could work - this is usually done with Java or QuickTime/Flash (which suggest we might want to move this to server-side scripting or multimedia) depending on how complex you want to get. GRUMBLE is your man for this kind of thing - there was also a thread in the main forum which discussed this sort of thing and answered some of those questions. I'll try and dig that out.

[edit: Here it is:

it covers similar topics]

I suspect I should extract the information to a FAQ.

Emps, thanks as always! I am hoping any of the methods from your links are not very pricy (buying Quicktime development software, a camera that can do this, etc.). The customer wants the tour, but I told him that it may be more expensive than what I had quoted. Basically, I have a digital camera, some knowledge of DHTML, Flash, and a short timeline.

GRUMBLE: What would you suggest would be fastest, cheapest?

I have the equipment to do this (360 degree java tour) but am not near you. I'll get into the developers network and see if I can find someone in your area (or you can fly me in =)

if you wanna go the DHTML route I'd suggest you get a tripod for your camera and shoot the room (try to light the room as evenly as possible). I have some panorama stitching software by Nikon that I'd be happy to run it through for you if you can take care of the javascript.

email me if you need anything...

JK...THANKS! If I do go the DHTML route, would I need the fisheye lens?? I dont have one, nor do I think there is one available for my camera... Any rate, I'm gonna call them!

no fisheye, if I'm thinking right... the dhtml just goes back and forth right? you could just do a series of stills all the way around the room, then I could make a seamless panorama (or you could give it a whirl yourself in Photoshop or something). You wouldn't be able to check out the ceiling or floor if that's of any interest (and you wouldn't get the zoom in/out features w/o the 360 thing). Just make sure you have a level and steady tripod and even lighting if you can and the rest should work itself out.
