My javascript sucks big time, and I need a little help on a small script for a Kids photo page. It's for a Transport organisation that is non profit making and to which I'm a committee member as well as the unpaid webmaster.
Obviously I don't want all and sundry downloading graphics - although I'm fully aware if you've got a graphics prog it's easy. However, I've added a script which disables the right mouse function to the page, but it only works in IE, and it must work with NN & Op.

I'd appreciate any help...........

Here's the link to the page in question, pleasee take a look and if you can help I'd appreciate it greatly. Also if you like Trucks, take a look around the rest of the site (all CSS)...... http://www.pda-uk.org/html/truckfests/juniors.html

Well... you do know that any right click script can be quite easily gotten around?

Phil: You should really avoid such things as they are easily circumvented (as Slime has said) and only end up frustrating legitimate users who use their right mouse button a lot (like me).

I agree, getting images from a web page is as simple as draging them onto the desktop. By disabling the right mouse button your doing more harm than good IMHO.

Just put a big red black and white warning message on the page. That oughta scare the little kiddies into line.

It's not the little kiddies I'm concerned about, unfortunately it's the perves out there.

The majority of users (98%) to this site are complete novices. What we're trying to achieve is some fun for the kids without the parents worrying about what the Dirty Mac brigade my be up to if they stumbled across this page when uploaded with content. I guess it's our way of trying to be reassuring.

Any thoughts????

Well, there really is no way to keep the pictures perfectly safe. Whether or not a right-click script is a good idea depends on the average IQ of the types of people you're worried about. I have no idea how difficult they would find it to get around the script.

Honestly, I wouldn't use it myself, because it compromises the experience of the legitimate people using the site, and it doesn't guarantee any safety (although it may give a false feeling of safety to the parents; but is that really a good idea?).

Thanks for your thoughts on this guys. I'll put this one back into the laps of the rest of the committee for discussion.

Phil: The only way I can see to address your concern is to password protect the pages so you have control over who gets in. The Dirty Mac brigade would steam right through just about any precuation you put in place to protect the images (although I suspect they probably have better things to do with their time). Basically any such measures would discourage on the least motivated image thieves.

phil - i'm afraid that it really is just a waste of time.
screen capping, saving the page to hard disk, left clicking THEN right clicking - there are dozens of ways around it. (heck, they could even simply take a photo of their monitor.)

alternatives could be to only have a small thumbnail, and not include the bigger pictures, or just don't include any names with the photos (or no surnames), a secure section as mentioned earlier, or replacing all the heads in the photos with webshamans.

but these are still just rough ideas, as i'm not 100% sure of what you are trying to achieve.

i would still, however, love to hear what eventuates from this.

Now there is an idea that would keep the Dirty Mac brigade under warps - we should make a PS plugin called 'Shamanize'
