Nobody can help you learn Photoshop - only you can. People can give you tips and advice on specific questions - but it really is up to you to make the effort and play and explore the program.

A good place to start is the manual and the help section in PS. There are many beginners Tutorials on the Net - use google - you will be amazed what you will find.

Post an your images - ask questions and read the responses good and bad, take them to heart and work with the suggestions that were made.

Bottomline is:

Get to know the program - what is what and what does what....
Play and practice - lots of practice - play some more and when you do that and you get stuck ask.

edit: guess posted at the same time or I was to slow here:
plaster bags ?? you mean plastic?

A good idea is to post links or thumbnail images of what you've already accomplished, as well as asking specific questions about where you want to go next. General "how do I do this" questions usually get pretty harsh responses around here.

Open the program, play around with it for a couple of weeks, turn something out, and then come ask us what we think.

1) Read the Manual

2) Play around with the program

3) Read more

4) Practice more

5) check out the tutorials that are linked to at the bottom of every page here

6) Practice more

7) If you are stuck on a particular area or have specific questions, post what you've come up with and ask about your problem. "How to make a poster of a plasters bag" is not a question that is going to get you any answers.

ShakeurBom .:. The biggest mystery in life is Photoshop (everyone is now straching their heads after that comment). It took me a while to figure out the program and I'm still figuring it out, three versions later, but I have found that the secret to Photoshop is simple ::: Layers, layers and more layer, oh, and of course the transparency of said layers. If you screw something ;;; ctrl+Alt+z, or just go back in your history. Simple right. Yeah right. Give a lash.

Maybe you should take a few steps back - kind of learn to walk before you start running.
Not sure if this makes sense?

97 % of the people in here run with Photoshop you and me and some unknown lurking person are trying to just simply to get a handle on this.

To me Photoshop is one big Toybox ... sometimes I just pick a tool and simply play with it and play meaning practice and sometimes for hours.

Everyone started at one point with the program if it is Synax, Mahi ... ? and on it goes (not picking on you guys) and they spent lots and lots of time practicing.

Maybe post one of your images and go from there ? People can then see what you are doing right and or wrong.

Very often, in Egypt, the software comes "without the manual" .. if you know what I mean ... In that case your only options are to read the help pages as though they were a manual, or buy a book to help you.

I'm an experimenter by nature, so I found tat the best way to come up to speed with Photoshop was to DO THINGS with it ... find something I liked, try to make it myself, keep trying, then find tutorials to show me how someone else did it ... then try again 'till you know how to do it ... then move on to a new technique and start all over again. In time, you will build up a repetoire of techniques, and you will find your skills have improved along with them.

Also ... Trust google .. google is your friend ... you can find ANYTHING with google as long as you ask well worded questions.

Hello ShakeurBom,
Sometimes it is difficult to even ask the right question eh? All the above suggestions are rock solid advice, believe me.
Have a look at My sig development I started off with the text (my name) in PS (PhotoShop) used a couple of effects on it and posted it up in the "Big Sig" section for others to comment and add suggestions. if you need to know how to include images with your posts, you should find the answers Here .
When you are writing a reply have a look to the left where it says *UBB Code is ON, and click on it. That will show you how to do most things with your posts.
It all seems a bit daunting at first, but you have to put the time in to get results from PS, and when you do, I'll bet you want more. Good luck.

Well, just a personal opinion: If you're having trouble figuring out Photoshop, the last thing you need to do is move on to a second unrelated program with even more complexities.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Actually, I've never taken any classes in web design or PS or anything like that, and I believe I'm fair-to-middlin'. There's still lots to learn, of course, but I can do most of my learning on the web.

I dunno, it kind of seems like you expect these classes to be magic pills that are suddenly going to turn you into a "designer." I know some people here have taken classes, but a lot of people haven't. For me, the recipe has been something along these lines:

5 parts research on the Internet
3 parts listening to advice, criticism, etc.
2 parts common sense
(and 10 parts screwing around trying to get things to actually work! - Thanks DL )

The proportions may vary depending on the person, but I think those three things are very important. I'm not trying to discourage you from taking classes, of course, but I don't want you to be disappointed when you take two or three of them and you find out your still not a super-designer.

[Edit: Hmm... I wonder if I am coming off as some snobbish know-it-all here. That is not my intention, and I certainly do not know it all. I am not a web designer by trade, but I do like to tinker. I suppose you can check out my website and then decide whether or not you should listen to me or just ignore me.]

Cool, well as long as you know that it's not going to happen in a day. If you just want to learn the basics, though, you might not necessarily need to take classes. I know plenty of people here (myself included) who have learned the basics through experimentation and research on their own.

Like I said, though, if you want to take classes, more power to you. But it's not the only way.

I mostly taught myself by experimenting. One fine day I read about the Emboss/Gauss combo, so I sat down and played with Emboss until I had it figured out; then I played with Gauss until I had it figured out (not that hard to figure out Gauss); then I played with both as a combo until I had it figured out. Another day I decided to learn to the Pen tools, so I sat down and played with each one until I had it all (almost all) figured out. Polar Coords? Played with it until I had it figured out.

As I am so fond of saying, "play.fiddle.learn".
That's my method.
Takes time, dedication, and a love for certain things.

Some of the most fun I've had with PhotoShop is figuring out the foibles. Nothing like making Stupid Mistakes.

Many people here have offered you good advice, but I'm going to give you a good guideline: Don't use the F word. Don't ever use the F word.

Of course, by the F word, I mean filters. They can be helpful, but try as hard as you can to stay away from them. They more than likely produce cheap, well...filtery effects. Avoiding them can make your work look much better and more "proffesional."

There are some usefull, not cheap-looking filters though. Like: polar coordinates, gaussian blur, sharpen, lighting effects etcetera, but nothing ruins an image more than seeing lens flare, or the watercolor filter.

--

On more thing, more of a side note, please use COMPLETE WORDS AND CORRECT SPACING.

I hate having to read: "nvrmind," "neone," "yr," and stuff like that. Please use "nevermind, "anyone," and
your."

I'd have to say your perspective is a little flawed CFB, though your intentions are good.

Many filters serve a very vaild purpose, and without them, well....you might as well just use Painter

The key is to use them wisely, and to realize that everyone has seen what filters can do, so when you put out a piece of work with a bunch of filters randomly run over it....people will know that's all it is.

A class can be helpful. I was pretty clueless in PS when I first got it. Even playing around wasn't yielding satisfactory results. I enrolled in a basic distance learning course just to get some direction in the program! While I don't consider myself to be a world class designer in PS - at least I know what all the tool buttons mean!

Though I can't see how a Flash course is going to help you at all in PS.

3. google.com and gurusnetwork.com is your friend, look for tutorials. Search for them.
4. Avoid most of the filters like the plague.

and the most important one...

If you can, pick up the Photoshop WOW book. It should have some excersises in there that you might find very useful and help get you started.

As stated by the other members, find some tutorials on the web. They are pretty basic, easy to understand, and have step by step instructions so you don't get lost.

the Gurus Network tuts are really good. Worth working through several times, as they don't just teach you how to acheive a specific effect, but how to use the tools properly instead. That way, you can apply what you've learned to something other than the example in the tutorial.

ShakeurBom, a few years ago i was placed in a job where i had to use photoshop for a living. i scratched my head for hours trying to make the program do something useful. in the end i had to read the manual cover to cover and practice in my own time for months. i've now read the manual 3 times, each time gleaning a little more. back then i had no one to ask.
