how am i supposed to make one in the channel selection, shouldn't it already be there? im new with this, so deal with the dumb questions...

basically you dont, you use an alpha channel to develop the basis of a layer mask. Once you have your channel work complete, you would convert it to a selection, and then use that selection to apply your layer mask.

You work on your channel in black, white or shades of gray. Funnily enough, this is very similar to how a layer mask works. So therefore, when you have completed your work in your alpaha channel, you just transfer the inforamtion to a layer mask and voila! ymmv look up alpha channels/layer masks in your menuel
