OK...this belongs in the PS forum, even though I think he used a 3D app to do that....

Before I start...I'll just say right now that I hate this 'abstract crystal background' effect. It'd be a cool kinda thing if everyone weren't doing it. It's like flash...t'd be cool if it weren't everywhere and..well...so damn flashy!

anyway...you may want to try these:
http://www.voidix.com/crystals2.html
http://www.voidix.com/wavy.html

you cna adapt the effects they're using there (plus using some colours OTHER than blue) to create the same kind of effect there...and spend a good couple of hours getting it looking right. Or you could go into 3D Studio MAX, grab a nice high poly sphere, add a noise modifier, pump the values right up and add a nice translucent material to it, double sided of course, clone, alter colour, rotate, change seed value for noise modifier, render, done. 15 minutes, if that.

Anyway...if you're after that effect...either of these methods will work, but really...do we need to drop another one of thee images on top of the mountain of others just like it?

Wow, thanks alot skaajj for that tutorial site. Look's like I have alot of learning to do today :O but the reason I really asked this question was because I just wanted to know how people made it. I know I've seen many of the same effects on the net. But it's alway's a good idea to know how to do them well I appricate it skaajj

Create a bunch of triangles. Use the transform tool to get different sizes, shapes, and angles.

Make each one on a seperate layer, and play with the layer Opacity and Blending Modes.

Voila - instant trend-whore crap.

If you'd like to make it even worse, try adding some text that is far too small to actually read, inside some outlined boxes with random 45 degree angled cuts/protrusions on them.

Make it really big and use it as a splash page so people have to laod a giant ugly image before they realize it's just a splash page and they still have to click something jsut to get to the web page.

=)

What DL said
these days splash pages, even fast loading ones are considered anti-social and unproductive on web pages. If however you want to show off your ability to create such images then add a thumbnail link to it on the site and give the visiter the choice of downloading it.

There are still a lot of people using dial up to connect to the web who don't appreciate the extra time taken to download splash.

This is not for a splash page or a web-site. I'm just doing this for my self-enjoyment of plain old fun

OK..If it's just for you to do and learn with (in this case learning what should not be put online)...I think that's far more acceptable.

Ok. I'll bite. Could someone explain what trend-whore is? I'd hate to think I was guilty of offending anyone's sense of web style.

Moth: DL pretty much summed it up:

1. Big crystally type things.

2. Very small text.

3. Outline boxes with the corner snipped off.

basically just what it says....

A person who does all the latest trend/fad crap all over the web, which tends at this point to be either all the "crystal" or "cell" junk, with all the itty bitty pixel fonts (usually ones that look quite bad) in every place they can be crammed, odd angles sticking out of every possible box on a page, etc., or the "grunge" junk that gets lower and lower quality day by day...

Unfortunately, this large group of people are such trend-whores that they are starting to call themselves trend-whores as if "trendwhore" is a style rather than an insulting name for the mindless drones who produce the crap in question.

Ok. Gotcha'

My confusion was that trend-whore was a specific style. But, your explanation makes more sense.

I think the most appropriate response in this kind of situation is:

"How would you make this?"

"I wouldn't"

i think you guys have forgotten the base IDEA of the web. see, the whole idea of the web and web pages in general is to make blue underlined text - that isn't a link in any way at all, just "cool" blue, underlined text, exactly like a link next to it.

remember - you may need this tip in later life.
