I know this has been asked before, but the info I found doesn't quite work for my application. What I'm trying to do is create a James Bond intro type effect, to be displaced onto a spherical object. I would post my attempts, but none actually capture any swirl type of effect at all, so it's pointless.

One option is to create a whole lot of radiating lines, then use the liquefy tool with a brush that covers your whole image to twirl the whole thing.

Isn't that what the "twirl" filter is for?

1. Start with a canvas that is a bit bigger than the swirl image you're looking for.

2. Draw 4 lines. Two that split a square image in half horizontally and vertically. Two more that go diagonally from corner to corner. Make sure they intersect in the middle.

3. Run Filter > Distort > Twirl. Mine was about 150 degrees I think. You'll be able to preview the effect before you commit to it.

4. Crop accordingly.

Here it is. Didn't want to post another topic, so if you're bored or something, It'd be helpful if you help me with the grooves. Even if I make a new one, help would still be able to be applied. Yeah, well, here it is:

Well, they're jaggy. If your original lines are like that, try to smooth them out. Then use the softlight+offset method to make the grooves. That means make one lines layer filled with black and one filled with white, both set to softlight. Then move the white one down 1px and left 1px. Or diagonally in whichever direction you choose...

Thanks a whole buch Raptor, that technique improved the image a WHOLE lot. If you want to see the "after" state of the image, it's in the Sig Contest topic.

Once you have sorted out the lines, you then need to work on the shading for each segment individually, as it stands at the moment, it doesnt quite work. Pick your light source and adjust accordingly.

Good concept though and i am sure it will good when you have completed it.

I think this thread might be better moved to the SIGS SECTION though
