Well that depends on what you want do. I assume you are looking to group layers together so they don't move relative to each other ? If so, You'll want to use "Layer Linking". Each layer has to boxes next to it, an eye or Disply Layer, and the active layer/link box, Simply click on the layers next to each other you want to link, a small chain link icon will appear. The layers should now move together as one. You might find it a bit tricky at first, so I would check out the manual under linking or layer linking.

You can also move layers together up and down in the layers pallete, to do so you need to use layer sets.

You might also find a menu item called "Group linked layers" but its for creating what is called a "Clipping Group" Bascily a method where one layers, can clip the contents of another layer. I rarely use clipping groups anymore, as I find in most cases there are now better methods to get the same result.

I don't want to read anything from such a dimwit.
Not wanting to spend a *whole* day reading the pretty extensive ps manual,
but beliving he can steal our time with questions that he could have answered by looking in the index (15 seconds) and reading a *whole* chapter (maybe 5-15 minutes?)

I am speechless.

I don't want to sound too RTFM, but open Photoshop then press Help > Photoshop Help > Using Layers > Creating clipping groups or Help > Photoshop Help > Using Layers > Working with layered images.

One great thing with Photoshop, is that almost everything is explained in the soft itself. Just leave your mouse here and there for a while and you'll be given some short informations. Look at the blah blah in the status bar and you'll know what you can do and which key combination you can use in addition to the tool you're using.

Whatever, welcome and I hope you've found what you were looking for.

[edit] In addition to Tyberius Prime's remarks, I'd say that he/she will waste much more time waiting for someone to answer his/her question than reading the manual or using a search engine. [/edit]

A "whole day reading the manual"

Some people spend whole weeks reading such things.

Why?
Because it tells you how to use the program Shhh, don't tell - it'll be our little secret

That way you don't have to waste everyone else's time with questions that don't need to be asked...

i'm no artist, and i'm not making an accusation of any kind, but i think i should point out that certain... er... illegitimate or slightly illegitimate versions of ps may not come with a manual. why would you spend all day reading the manual if the only thing you want to find out about is grouping layers?

again, i'm not making any accusations and i do realise i'm not helping at all here, just keep that factor in mind.

Here's "dl's little comments" -

That's where HELP files come into play.

That's also where a total lack of sympathy comes into play, since, if you can't be bothered to acquire legal software, why should anyone else be bothered to help you with it? Not that I care personally whether or not someone paid for their software.....but I assume you get the point....

Why would you spend all day reading the manual, if you all you want to know is how to group layers? Because if that's the level you're at, it's a pretty good indication that you need to spend some more time getting to know your program.

And, wouldn't you know it - that's what the manual does for you!

Or, if you have misplaced your manual, the help files do an excellent job as well.

sorry, that may have come across the wrong way. i wasn't referring to myself wanting to find out how to group layers, i was talking about our good friend who started the thread in the first place. of course, you could also be made to think that i have illegal software installed. i was referring to tor, who may or may not. it doesnt matter, tor, you should certainly look around before asking a simple question on a forum. there are literally thousands of tutorials on ps around, and the adobe website could be a good start.

i may have taken your "little comments" the wrong way dl, but that's what it sounded like you were saying.

Hopefully that answers your question. Well, not really.

Please explain to me what is "eletist" about expecting people to actually do a bit of work for themsleves, BS.

I see nothing even remotely elitist in this thread. I see someone asking a question that could easily have been answered by looking in the help files, and then bitching that they don't want to spend any time or effort learning how to use the program for themselves.

Yes, tutorials are good things.
Yes, everybody needs help.

That is understood, and it is irrelevent in cases such as these.

BS - perhaps you haven't been here long enough to notice, but there is a wealth of help given here on a continual basis. There is nothing elitist about the group here.

But you get nowhere without doing some legwork yourself. Period. And if someone isn't interested enough to put out the effort, why in hell should anyone else be?
