Clicky
here it is, first time painting self portrait....came out pretty good, me think.
Critiques are always welcome...wanted to make some kind of rembrandt like theme.
Used old photo for light, but it looks nothing like photograph, plus my hair is longer now and the direction of face is different from photograph...I know maybe hair lacks some ligh but eh...

That painting is really good, and it has TONS of life to it. However:

Something bugs me about the nose and right (our right) cheeck region. I can't put a finger on it, but I think it was to do with the way it was painted.

Anyways, good job.

great work.

I can't really see what problems yo might be talking about, CFB. Looks good to me.

How large was this originally done, and how did you make it digital (scan, photo, etc)?

As far as making it like Rembrandt, well....
You did a good job of using dramatic lighting, and some really nice orange tones in there, but a great of subtelty is generally to be found in a Rembrandt, and a whole lot of fantasticly rendered texture that is lacking from this. There are also all of those medium tones that are always present in a rembrandt....the more neutral beiges and browns that lend so much to the overall tone and balance that aren't oresent here.

So - nice work, looks great. But not rembrandt =)

Really good work Ruski I like it. I too would be interested in the answers to the questions DL-44 posed.
Is this now a finished work, if so how are you "presenting" it? eg. have you framed it yet or is it on a board? I think the colours would work really well with the Asylums btw.

Ay, thanks..

well the size is 18X24 inches, I used digital cam to take a shot at it, no real adjustments were made, just resized it.
I am not sure whats wrong with nose...I personally think the ear looks suck =)
DL, thanks for advice I will keep it in mind next time I will paint similar ones....
Tao, no I am not framing it and I sumbmited it for my college portfolio in slide...
and yes its finished work... to me its more of an expermental work. Its done, time to move one and try something new....

hopefully in couple of weeks I will show you something new, I am into portraits alot lately =)

Hope this helps clarify what I meant:

I realize that everyone has different facial structures (read: I hope I don't offend you), but I hope it helps, anyways.

Either way, though, it is a VERY nice painting.

BTW that is me on the left.

(EDIT: I mean right)

What I meant was...the check should start at the top of the nose and continue from there.

I like it. The brushstrokes and lines are really nice.... Though, I think, the subtleties of chauro-scuro (sp.?) that you may be looking for could use some work... A few more shades of the darker color might lend some subtle detail to the left side of the image. Your eye is a little large-ish, but I think it works, in the mood of the painting. Your ear there looks a little flat - and could use some work. But on the whole, a very nice feel to it.
