Its quite hard for me to believe that what started like this, ended up becoming this.

It was just meant to be a simple shading for the rough lineart, until i saw the thumb in the layer menu, and saw that the shading looked like a face by itself, which made me disable lineart layer and see what could I make. You can see the result in the second link :P. I feel proud of it, because I did not use references for it at all (although I realize some parts are anatomically incorrect), just based on my very own studies of a human face, which feels really really good, and makes me giggle and blush like a little girl.

(yeah, i just felt like showoff, buts just that i feel so cool, since i didnt have a really good new year's eve, this was what compensates it).

Push the lighting and fix the major anatomy problems - cheifly the fact that the entire face is kinda...warped.

it's cool, did you use smuge tool? -how long did it take you? you know there's a fast way to get a better quality...first smuge around the picture so you'll have a fake smooth skin, then use low opacity hardbrush to more like define the image , give it a shape... good luck

To give the image shape and depth, use a mid-sized hard brush with no feathering at 100% opacity to block out volume, then refine it (with 100-70% hard brushes) from there.

[EDIT: No more insult]

Synax: Obviously it is there for a reason, but when was the last time you smudged a painting? A drawing, sure, I use smudge sticks when I feel like doing a nice rendering, but a painting?

In matters of making art, there is no authority but yourself, there is no wrong or right, only satisfaction, or none.

I use the smudge tool hella bunch and my results do not suck. Quit fussin about technique already, learn what you wanna and forget what you don't.

I just use smudge for irrgular stuff like smoke and flames. I find it great for that, but for solid object at such, a brush is better for me.

regarding my painting, I am still working on it. A mere couple of minutes per day, but damn laziness taking control of mesa.

Hopefully I can redeem myself here :

You've admitted that there are anatomy problems, so I won't nitpick that do death, but I will hit on some major things: It looks like the maqn in the painting has a tumor on the left side of his head, because its sticking out (a lot!). Also, the area around the eyes, and the eyes in particular, look a bit weird. The eye shape also seems to be a little off. That neck is awefully thin as well

The picture looks like a bas-releif, as well. The face has no real sense of depth, of volume. It looks like someone chipped away at stone about an inch deep and carved a face into it. Your lightsource is coming from the viewer, and yet not everything that should be highlighted is highlighted. For instance: The skin under his chin that is visible from him smiling, and the middle area of his chin - in other areas, such as the area surrounding and comprising the eyes, the lightsource seems to be coming from several different places. Id try fixing this, and also incorporating a large lightsource that hits the face on either the left or right, which would make the head seem moreof a 3-d eliptical and less of a bas-releif.

You really need to push the lighting as well. Right now you've just got a lot neutral gray colors - no extreme darks and lights. It's not so important to stick in the extreme lights, but at least extreme darks to even our the amount of mid-range gray that you've got going here.

The hair looks good, except for the face that it doesn't really look like hair in some places, such as on the right of the image, where the hair looks like fur because of the face that if comes out in layered clumps. Also the hair else-where seems a bit stiff.

In terms of the image as a whole, it's a bit boring. Face-on camera views have to be done just right in order to make them interesting. In general, it's always safe to say that something around a 3/4ths view of the head is always fairly interesting, and any extremely odd angle usually makes the image more lively.

Other than that, the image looks good.

First of all, highfive for knowing about bengal. s/he's fucking great and love all his/her work. Plus a lot of good links s/he got, ^^. Next, thansk for the critiques, since that was what i aimed with this thread (and showing off, of course, haha).

Now, onto the topic:

It looks like the maqn in the painting has a tumor on the left side of his head, because its sticking out (a lot!).

I just noticed that! I think i didnt even worked on that place, as i almost forgot about it :P

quote:
Also, the area around the eyes, and the eyes in particular, look a bit weird.

Yah, her right eye is much bigger than left, someone pointed that out to me, and is horribly taking me much more time than i thought. asdfgh

quote:

Yes -_-

I didnt understand clearly the comment about the chin, but i see where are you going at. I still have problems with multiple lightsources, but i'll try my best.

Seem that I have fallen in a common artist mistake: fear for contrast. I usually push much more darks (proof of it ^^, its imcomplte too, tho ), but i kinda assumed I should be a bit more careful when aiming for realism, but i think now that i did underdo a bit that matter.

quote:

Didnt undertsand very well that. :/. My english is not very good yet (and ironically, i got international business level on my english class; I love Mexico. haha)

Note that this image by itself was just a sort of ego-booster and an experiment. As stated before, i never tried to do a "realistic" face before, and this sketch wasnt aimed for that either. The thumb in the layers window was what motivated me to see how far i could go on it, and well, you are seeing the results. It wasnt made to be interesting either (which is why i wont ever add it to my devart gallery :P). As i lready repeated, its merely an experiment. A good result on it, which is why i posted it (well, asking for critiks as well )

I doubt my lazy ass will really bother to finish it, but i learned some interesting stuff with it, and most of its failures will be taken in consideration for the future.

I will still try to see what can I improve on it.

Hehe, Alevice: Bengal is a like a demigod to me

Heres what I mean with the lighting (excuse the obvious errors, this was a quick job):

Here you have a face with about the same lighting as yours, and on the face your going to have some areas that are farther towards the viewer than others (outlined in red). Those are going to be the lightest because they will catch the most light. Any area that is not visible or directly facing the viewer will be shaded, because not as much light is getting to it, like the area on the sides of the nose and the on the side of your face.

Hope this clarifies what I meant.

Anyways...
