Self portraits, someone from life or even a photo if that works for you.

Say 10 - 60 mins? Take longer if you want

Can't remember the rest of the rules but that sounds about right..

This is the first self portrait I've tried to do ever. Well, maybe I doodled one or two at school, but that was about a hundred years ago in the last millenium.
As you can see I am a natural artistic genius This only took me an hour, and I never want to look at my ugly mush in a mirror again. I used PhotoShop, with the graphic tablet, and a mirror.
Ruski and cfb, good work fellas, do you have any hints for me and my scrawl, keeping in mind that, having had to look at myself in the mirror for so long, my self esteem is on life support.

Looks like a positive and good first attempt Tao. Even though you didn't get to shading, I can tell it looks like you (from photo) and that you've taken good care to get the shape of your features basically right. The next step is to add some values, just go with shades of gray rather than colour. Blob on darker grays where the shadows are deepest and lighter where the light hits. I think this will add greatly to your portrait.

You might find it easier to use low opacity brush settings at first. That way the blobs of (digital) paint won't overwhelm you and you'll still be able to see your sketch underneath. Very helpful when you're new

Don't even worry about the time, it's not important. Nice first go!

Advice? Yep.....History says that Caravaggio was almost blind by daylight and only painted at night.... So be like Caravggio....sorta.

Blur your eyes occasionally when looking at your subject to start. You want to start off by blocking out the darks and lights, the basic shape of the face and its components. Blur your eyes to get the angles down then sketch....feel the line, don't try and reproduce it. Blocking in is a major part of any piece, yet everyon wants to try and skip it.

Once you've roughed it all out, then you can look clearly and start working the revisions...refine your sketch lines a bit, get crisper, sharper.

It's all about the base though....and you're headed in the right direction.

Go again.

Thank you Amerasu, I will try your suggestions. I started off just wanting to post something in this thread, I've been meaning to for ages but kept on putting it off, now I guess you can see why, heh
I know my drawing "talents" leave a lot to be desired, but having done this I actually did enjoy the exercise. I'll carry on with this now, as it is a landmark for me, the first digital drawing with my Medion tablet. How big is your graphical tablet btw? This one I have is big, 15" x 14", at least I think that's big for a tablet.

::tao::
[edit]Ah DarkGarden we posted at the same time almost (always makes me chuckle for some reason) thank you too for the pointers. I certainly will try that out.
Being really ancient and needing to wear glasses more and more both for reading and distance, I was feeling very clumsy having to either, wear my distance glasses so I could see myself in the mirror but not see too much detail on the screen, or swap them to my reading ones for the screenwork.
Your suggestion has made me think that I may be able to use this to my advantage and start off with blurred vision (no glases) to block in the switch to reading glasses for the close up work. Well, it's a thought anyway. [/edit]

Let see - This portrait has a severe case of mediocrity, but...whatever.

I saved the steps, in any case. Maybe they can be of some use to you, Tao.

In the first step, I made a light sketch with a 30% opacity brush, with the color set to black. Usually, you'd want to avoid using black in a painting, even a grayscale painting, as it looks very unnatural, but for this, it doesn't matter. After I had a basic outline, I blocked in where I wanted the shadows to be. At this point, the painting is very crude.

For the second step, I used a dark-gray brush at 60% opacity to cover the image, also darkening the initial lines. Then I continued to work on the shadows with the 60% brush, and after that added some highlights with a ligher shade of gray, also at 60%. I then blended them with a 30% brush, by sampling colors.

On the third image, I mostly blended with a 35% brush, by sampling colors and mixing them on the image. I tried to bring definition to the face, by blocking out some of the details, as well as concentrating on the lighting and form more; trying to get it down pat. It didn't work too well

For the fourth/final image, I just blended more, with a 25% brush, then went over some problem areas with a 50& brush again. Mostly reworking a lot of areas.

Anyways, hope that help a bit. Maybe? Yes? No?
