When I use these tools they create new layers and I cannot erase the lines, rectangles or ellipses, even though I'm on the corresponding layer. Why not? How do I edit the entities created with these tools?
Stumped.

That's not entirely acurate.

If you use those tools, and the option is set to make them 'shape layes', then what you've said is true. This happens because a shape layer is vector information, much like something made with the pen tool, or the type tool. You can't erase it, because it's not laid down in raster information.

When you use these tools, make sure the option (along the top bar) is set to 'fill pixels' instead.

lets hope this fixes this thread...

anywhoo... *looks around as plater falls off the walls*

Or you could use the pen tools to muck around with the path itself.

The line tool, and rectangle, so on... all are editible paths. Very flexible. Look em up!

Alternatively, you could go to the path tool options and hide the lines layers [make the paths invisible] after you've achieved the desired result.

DL: I do not see the "fill pixels" option listed anywhere on the top bar. That is what it's doing though; making shapes layers. Where else might I find the "fill pixels" option?
Thank-you,

Ahh, but a shape layer is not made of pixels, but vector information as DL says above. Mayhap you are using an earlier version of PS, it's been a while since I have used anything but 7, so I forget if those options are in earlier versions.

Quick and simple fix, right click your shape layer in the layers palette and choose "Rasterize Layer." You will now be able to edit the layer.

I found it! I found it! It's one of those pesky "hover" buttons with the cryptic icon.
Thank-you all.
