Would the following be correct for setting the keywords for the webpage that will show on search engins? I ti got this right now but am not too sure.

This is in the head tag and I have nothing else around it at this time.

code:
<meta name="keywords"
content="reconditioner, haying,
forage, timothy export, timothy, alfalfa, conditioner, hay reconditioning,
swath turner, swath inverter, rake, ReCon 200, recon, ReCon, birdsfoot trefoil,
brome grass, hemp, export timothy, fast drydown, beat the rain">

That's right. I'm still not sure if using mroe than one word works, but I see it so so often when looking at other people's code that I believe that it is legal.

I don't want to ruin your efforts, but the keywords metatag is struggling, if not dead. As stated in Andrew Goodman's 2 parts article entitled "Enough Already" ( Part 1 / Part 2 ), the keyword metatag have been abused since a long time and the major search engines use it quite sparingly now ( if not at all ). You can also read Danny Sullivan's article named "Death of a Meta Tag".

This is also true. In terms of formatting, you are fine. In terms of practicality, no.. Google doesn't use keywords for example. Google uses anchors that link you your site from other locations.

Bmud: Well I suspect the algorithim is more complex than that.

My current rule of thumb is jam in some keyword and description metatags 9as it is a good way of getting keywords into your source) but don't waste too much time worrying about it. I would avoid repeating words (like export) as this might be considered as spamming but...........
