As we last left our hero, he had encountered an unfortunate limitation of lengths and alignment. Would he escape? Would he find a solution? Let's find out...

Well, I chalked up my bargain motherboard/processor deal as a worthwhile risk for the price and took it back, thankful for the life lesson. Okay, I was royally pissed, but what could I do? My options were getting one of the newer, shorter Canopus video-editing boards, which I really couldn't afford and with which I may still have compatibility problems, or I could shop for a new case all over again after having just done so, which resulted in this case being the best buy in the first place. So, although it seemed a drastic measure, I got a different motherboard before I could no longer return the VIA.

The next candidate was a Soyo similar to the one my father recently purchased, coupled with a powerful 2GHz processor ? Fry's newest weekend bargain. With the experience I gained from the first go, and not pausing to take pictures all over again, I got through the installation fairly quickly.

The chipset employed by that particular board was on neither of Canopus's "friendly" or "unfriendly" lists, so I was a bit worried about charting new territory, but I liked the features the board had, so I gave it a chance.

Now, understand that I only have 15 days to return such items. So, I've got to test them vigorously in a short amount of free time. Of course, this is when the rains fell.



As some of you have already read, my ceiling began falling on me. There happens to be a section above my office that is not covered by the apartment above, but rather a small, sloped roof. Which leaks, apparently. Several hard rains and the sheetrock was penetrated, causing a large chunk of plaster to fall 3 feet from my new system.

So, the whole room came out. Books, shelves, enormous desk in many pieces, computer equipment, the works. Since the bedroom only had the bed and a dresser, I lifted the whole bed up against the wall, moved everything in there and piled together a makeshift desk.

That's where I've been for a week and a half. And that's where I had to continue testing the new system.

And guess what. It crapped out. While creating a music video employing a drunken high-school party (good times), I got serious system lockups. Some more extensive searching revealed that the chipset used by my motherboard, although not officially on the Canopus "unfriendly" list, is not recommended. Bah!

With one day to spare, back it went, along with the processor since it came as a package deal. Goodbye, sweet 2GHz.

Now, I've got an Intel board with a chipset that, although again not on Canopus's official lists, has been reported by other uses as being compatible. So the testing continues.

Here I am stuck with a 133Mhz (Which I'm lucky to have even that one) and 32Mb RAM which is at two different speeds... "lousy 1.8"... sheesh

Wangenstein - I started with that Vic-20, too. With an audio-cassette-tape drive.

Audio cassette tape drive... awwwww yeeaaaahhh...

I remember those. I used to play paperboy on one of those on my uncle's old commodore 64

Paperboy! Yes! But, my favorite was always Jumpman.

Remember the computers with no hard drives? That old time works better than my current computer. Apple IIgs and never had a problem.

I have jumpman on my PC right now...classic game it is....and pitfall on my old Atari 2600
