I'm very interested in making an interface like the Woodydex Interface. Can someone show me how to create the images for that kind of effect?

Well, the text effects are simple enough -- just the inset bars tecnique from the hands on tutes, with the same textute as the background but darkened. The wood peice I would imagine is a scanned image that has just been tweaked a bit to fit in. The wood grain texture shouldn't be *too* difficult to create, although if you want you can find them free for use on many sites that offer free graphics. If you want to make your own wood grain, just paly around with the filters a bit, different distortions, maybe start with a narrow image and resize it to a wider size to stretch it out....stuff like that. adjust the hue/saturation 'til you get the color that you want. Now I'm interested....maybe I'll give it a whirl : )
Does any of that help at all?

Heh. I remember when people first started asking me how I got my wood textures, what filters did I use? Basically, I had a digital camera, and there was this woodworkers store that had all kind of cool woods you could buy, in small planks, blocks, what have you. Most of the dark woods turned out pretty bad, but the oaks and the pines turned out great! So did the birch, nice effect there. Than I used photoshop to make it all tile, all while tweaking the saturation and levels, brightness and contrast to get a good effect. I find the realest looking things on screen are heavily exagerated in terms of contrast, at least that's my personal style. Still, the best natural effects come from NATURE, it's been doing it longer. Raw material is raw material, what you do with it is what counts.
The woodydex 'burned in' look was just the basic inset technique, as per the tutes. the dark bit in the middle was the same wood as underneath, just darkened a lot with heavy contrast. The different frames were a bit of a bitch, five frames of each text, each blurred more than the last, and with the levels tweaked high to give it sharp edges again. every time I got less and less text, as more was blasted away. Then I used these as masks and did the burned in thing with each and every one. Time consuming, but cool I thought.

RAW Materials - I've never think of using raw materials in Photoshop, but the idea is cool. Maybe I should think of other Raw materials rather than using just woods. I guess I have to be more creative in using those materials.

Plus, it's fun to say. "Raw Materials." I also like to refer to things like "Gross Functionality" and "Core Concept". The best buzzwords are the ones that are fun to say! :-) I also find that if you use concepts like this in a conversation, making a mental effort to keep those CAPITAL LETTERS in their place, clients tend to go all gushy and starry-eyed on you, and hardly *ever* argue with the idea. Hah! I like my brain, my best toy.
