Uh, you want it to be 3D or something? You can always just make a basic circle, raise the edges (or sink the middle, it's up to you) using lighting effects, give it a shine (perhaps using my metal tutorial -- curves) and then if you wanted to project it 3-dimensionally, just scale the coin in one direction and then make several layer copies of it, each moved a single pixel apart from each other in the direction you want it to project. Thne flatten all those layers and you've got a 3-D coin. I'd show you an example, but I'm at work. You'll have to wait until tonight. But that's my idea.

That still doesn't address how to get his face in relief on the coin. That's tougher. Start with profile shot, convert to grayscale, maybe a slight blur then emboss, clip to "coin" circle, then run metallic routine -- ? Make sense? Could be fun.

(Maybe play with some of the funky filters like bas relief?)

Just don't let the treasury catch you!!

a step by step tutorial on how to make a silver coin is needed.no one is exactly sure how to do it. wouldn't be fun to have a coin generated by computer with whatever relief you want on it and fonts.mmm ponder. the possibilities !!!

For the relief of his (her?) face on the coin, just scale an image of yourself, greyscale it and then use the emboss filter. Attach it to the middle of the coin and then tweak the metal tutorial. Like I said before, I'll do an example tonight, I'm at work right now.... not all of us are graphic designers for our jobs. Some of us are just lowly Quality Assurance Engineers.

photoshopclub.com has exactly what you want. If you want a gold coin like the one at diablo2.cybergamer.com. I can write a tutorial on that one.

I've gotten rather good results using lighting effects for putting faces on metal. Toss the facial picture into an alpha channel, guass around 4 or so, and lighting effects away. I find it much easier to control the specular, highlights, shadows, and whatever this way.

BUZZI :
Hi....
I played with a little coin / medal technique a while ago.......I didn't really get chance to finish it, too much work on .....
It's a slightly different approach to what you guys are trying.....
got to agree with WarJournal tho' ... Alpha channel is definately the way to go.....
Any way i finally have some time to kill, and chill...
I'll get it finished and post it when it's done.

err....*checks over each shoulder, and lowers voice before continuing*.
.......you wouldn't be interested in a "Biscuit" tutorial by any chance ...hmmm?

I had a quick try on this one as well. I guess I did it the easy way and threw a quarter on the scanner to have something to start with. I then cloned away Washington or whoever that guy is (eek! I hope this is not illegal! and glued in the face I was using. I desaturated it, and used the Lighting Effects on it. I put the layer blending to Luminosity and decreased the opacity a little. I then played around a little with curves and added a few highlights with the airbrush.

This might be a quick and easy way to go if you are not too concerned with the result.
If you make sure to get the highlights and shadows in the right places I am sure it could look pretty good. (unlike this little attempt of mine)

I have never read that until now...
I just made it up as I went...
I tried really quick to make the shape of a biscuit...
then I filled it with a lightish brown/orange color
added some monochromatic noise
blurred a little
then played with an alpha channel a bit and the final effect was a little directional lighting effect coming from the top.

cool coins all round...if you'll pardon the pun .....
my tut is getting out of hand as usual ... I'm trying to simplify the process, but i keep getting carried away......and i have a bug.... a real one
Here's the start of the tutorial .......probably need to seperate the two anyway...
not optimised and probably full of typo's, but the technique is covered.
It uses the 3D Transform tool to create the base coin shape, the excess polygons that this filter produces, can be turned around and used for some cool effects.....

i use tons of graphics...but it loads pretty quick.... http://ramdesign.8k.com/tutorials/3d-coin/coins.htm

Hope you like it ........i'll get it finished when i stop barfing...
feedback would be cool .....
