There was once a time, a long-forgotten time, before Microsoft created Windows and all we had on which to run our Wordperfect and our Zork was the command-line interface known as DOS.

how do i open it from my pc though? what key should i press?

If you don't know what it's for, then why do you need it?

You will probably find it in the Start menu under Accessories; it's called Command Prompt. Although I don't believe that's the real DOS anymore.

start>run> command or cmd and you wont be able to figure it out at all unless you look up some tutorial on it. its really only useful if you have a specific goal in mind. (at least in my case)

Start>>Run>> type "command" in there or START>>PROGRAMS>>ACCESSORIES>>MS-DOS PROMPT

Dos was the original Microsoft operation system, it was command line based. Early versions of Windows (through 98) were actually pretty GUI's layered on top of DOS. Essentially what happened when you clicked a program the OS pretty much just translated what the click meant into it's appropriate DOS command. The newer (2K based) MS OSs don't do this but offer the command line as a convenience

when in dos DO NOT try fdisk or format if you like the content from your hard disk.
About MSDos and commands
Google... Use MS-dos or dos as search term.
Someone here had a site about dos i think.
Dos = Disk Operating System
MS =! Mad Scientist in this case.

you can actually do some useful stuff with DOS still. Search the :FAQ: for backups.

I believe it was Silence that posted some great code to back a batch file to backup data.

Whoa... there are now people running around who don't know what DOS is. I knew this day would come, but I didn't realize I would weep so bitterly when it did. Nothing personal, of course.

Kind of makes you feel a little old, don't it.

DOS was designed specifically to be able to mention it in conversations in the year 2003 in order to freak out people who actually remember it well.

hehe, this kind of reminds me when I worked in a music library. A youngster came in and wanted to listen to something. All I had it on was vinyl. So I gave it to him to listen to. He was gone for a few minutes and came back and said "How do you work this thing?"

I knew at that moment that I was getting old
