Thank God - the browser is really starting to show its age. I'll be glad when all Mac users are using Safari (or Moz if they must but I'm not impressed by it).

I don't know if Mozilla for the Mac is any different than Mozilla for Windows, but if not, I'm all for it. Of course I would think more Mac users would probably opt for Safari...

It's funny, one of the reasons they stop is because safari has more access to the underlying OS, haha, payback's a bitch isn't it.

Call me strange, but I'd like to see healthy competition in the browser market for every OS. Now we're moving towards one standard for the PC and a different one for the Mac.

How exactly is this a good thing for us web developers?

Drac - any of the browsers that remain for the Mac *will* have healthy competition.

It's harder to say that about windows machines with IE still going for them (it's my understanding anyway that although IE won't be developed further as a standalone product, it will still be incorporated with the OS and with AOL and all that...and even if there are no further developments, the bulk of users will still stay with ie6 until long after it becomes the NN4.7 of modern borwsers...)

I still can't see how this is a good thing.

IF MS made a new version of IE for Mac and they made it fully compliant for a slew of W3C standards, why would that be a bad thing?

Now their not making a new version means people that currently use IE5 Mac will have to switch, but we all know that takes longer than it does for people to upgrade -- NN4.7 being a prime example of that.

Don't get me wrong. I despise Microsoft?s business tactics just as much as the next person but I think we should be hating them for dumping yet another drag on the design community, not praising the discontinued development of a browser that could have been a real boon to us.

The same goes for PC users really. We're stuck with IE6 until the next OS Microsoft release, and even then, what about the people that don't upgrade OS's the second they come out?... All this signals is massive delays in the evolution of web technologies all across the board. It'd be nice to think that the general web surfing community will be quick to adapt to and switch away from dating browsers but, well, if history is anything to go by....

I agree with Drac to and would add that it smells reeeally fishy to me. Those despised business tactics have worked for them and they've not grown stupid with success. I believe they have innovation in the wings, new markets that they will open and initially, if not toally dominate while everyone else is playing catch up to get on their bandwagon. If they're not gonna do a browser anymore, I have the sneaking suspicion that it's becasue they think it will be an obsolete technology in its current incarnation, and that scare me.
