i cropped this out from the sig-comp thread cause of the filesize


insider, what you see as a trapezoid is the shadow casted by the spotlight into the dust. the font itself is 100% rectangular.
i have a bigger version with another font too:

Grumble cool as hell, only one minor improvement i could see, but it really being picky..

as the light beam passes each of the letters the shadow would move slightly, ya have it in the first and last frames (letters g and e) the shadow is offset in line with the beams angle at the furthest angle it travels in each direction, if ya added the shadow movement in say 2 frames each direction ya would have it to perfection.

Really nice work though...

i know what you mean, but:
actually it doesnt move, since the light_source is always in the same position.

static light -> static shadow.

but yes, a moving shadow is a nice idea.

the rays of light from the torch would pass over the letters at a different angle so the shadows would not necessarily move but vary in length slightly as the beam is moving in an arc maybe with some slight movement in the shadows.

but like i said thats just getting really picky..

yes, you are right. the reason for this is - i talked with slime about that too - that i didnt use a real spolight but a normal light with a cylinder around it to create a spotlight-effect and so there is no real fall-off at the outer areas of the spotlight.

hehehe anyway its cool and thats all that matters, i can see what you mean, but the beam makes a lie of the great illusion you created by the shadow probs, but this is a sig comp not a 3d comp and i think ya got one of the top ones this month only mr suho to threaten ya this time, and ya got ya entry in on time

Rotating the cylinder and the light source in it from a pivot-point that's farther back, behind the actual source of the light, might create the effect that tom mentioned.

You know, I did think about this when I first saw the sig. I imagine that the shadows might change slightly as the light moves back and forth. My final analysis, though, was--who cares? It's a nifty sig, and that works for me. (Not to mention that making the shadows move would probably be a tremendous pain in the butt....)

Sorry grumbz I was a 3 day party for the last 3 days and I have been waking up at 5:30 P.M. And then going to sleep at noon and then waking up again at 11:00.

Then I am going to another party tommorow.

So I apologuise for not replying to this thread any sooner.

Anyway. I guess you're right. I didn't know critiquing it's basic lighting physic would stir up so much comotion. I am still curious though as to weather or not that would work with a very thin base. It still seems like it is just shining on a very trapazoidal object rather than light passing off of it. Maybe change the color the light behind the object to contrast more with the light shining on the object?

In any case, it is a great sig .
